Whether you’ve got mad skillz or are new to shooters, it doesn’t hurt to learn more about the basics in Ghost Recon Online (GRO). Here’s a guide to get you started.

    About the game
Ghost Recon Online is a PC online shooter that is Free To Play (F2P). In GRO, you will step into the boots of an elite Ghost and deploy cutting edge weapons and technology as you link up with your team to dominate tomorrow’s battlefield.
Remember – “Alone You Fight, Together We Dominate”.

Don’t forget to check out the News and Announcements that appear on the GRO Game Launcher and the website, for important updates.

    Classes and Abilities
GRO features a Class based system, with each Class of Ghosts specializing in certain tactics and styles of combat. There are 3 Classes of Ghosts – Assault, Recon and Specialist.

You can play as any of the 3 Classes – after logging into the game, make your choice at the “Class Selection” screen.

As you play GRO, you will earn Experience Points (XP) for the Class that you are using. Earning more XP will level up your respective Class characters.

Each Class possesses unique Abilities that will boost not only their own individual combat effectiveness, but those of their team as well.

The Assault - Like leading the charge and being in the middle of a firefight? Then this Class is for you. The Assault class specializes in attacking and taking down heavy enemy positions.

Class Ability: Blitz (one more Ability to be added in the future)
    Passive Team Ability: Armor Boost
    Weapons: Assault Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols

The Recon - Fast and stealthy, the Recon specializes in getting behind enemy lines and gathering intel. Whether engaging the enemy at long range with a sniper rifle, and up close with a sub-machine-gun, the Recon is skilled at silently taking out enemies.

Class Ability: Oracle Digital Interrogation & Active Cloaking System
    Passive Squad Ability: Intel Sharing
Weapons: Sniper Rifles, Submachine Guns and Pistols

The Specialist - Every effective Ghost team needs a Specialist to help hold the line. The Specialist provides valuable combat support by deploying advanced battlefield electronics to protect their team mates, or to degrade the combat effectiveness of the enemy.

Class Ability: AEGIS Ballistic Defense System & Blackout
    Passive Squad Ability: Resupplies Ammunition
Weapons: Light Machine Guns, Shotguns, Pistols

    Class Abilities
Blitz (Assault) – When activated, a bulletproof TS3b shield is deployed, and the Assault’s exoskeleton is overcharged to allow for a short burst of speed. The Blitz is most effective for breaking through enemy lines while under heavy fire.

Oracle Digital Interrogation (Recon) - the Oracle system hacks into the enemy IFF systems to reveal all enemy personnel locations within scanning range, and relays the intel to the Ghost team.

Active Cloaking System (Recon) – Active Cloaking allows the Ghost to become temporarily invisible, in order to cross exposed areas of the battlefield and get behind enemy lines.

AEGIS Ballistic Defence System (Specialist) - The AEGIS system charges up and deploys a shield that deflects bullets away from the Ghosts. It does so by triggering precision airbursts in the way of incoming bullets, thereby disrupting their trajectories.

Blackout (Specialist) – the Blackout Ability charges up and fires an electromagnetic pulse that disrupts electronics for a short duration, thereby disabling the active Abilities of the enemy.

Class Abilities are activated in-game by pressing the “F” key.

    Passive Team Abilities
It pays to maneuver and fight as a team in GRO. Each Class of Ghosts has a unique Passive Team Ability, which is activated automatically when the Ghosts are within range of each other.
When in range, Ghosts will see a blue Link-Up on their Heads Up Display (HUD), connecting them to their team mates.

Armor Boost (Assault) - The Assault’s wireless electricity transmitter reinforces the MR fluid armor of nearby Ghosts, temporarily strengthening their armor.

Intel Sharing (Recon) - The Recon’s intel system detects the origins of enemy gunfire and any fast-moving enemies, and then relays this battlefield intel to nearby Ghosts.

Ammunition Resupply (Specialist) - The Specialist carries an ample supply of ammunition for the team, and Ghosts can replenish their ammunition reserves by moving within range of the Specialist.

    Points System
There are 2 main types of points in GRO. You will earn these points by playing the game, and achieving various game objectives (e.g. winning a match, capturing a strategic point, killing the enemy).

Experience Points (XP) – XP is used to level up your GRO Class characters.

Requisition Points (RP) – RP is used to purchase the various game items that are available in the Store.

    Weapons
There are 6 categories of Weapons GRO. Certain Weapon categories can only be used by specific Ghost Classes, while other Weapon categories can be used by multiple Classes

Assault Rifle (Assault) - Ideal for short to medium range engagements, and breaking entrenched positions with short controlled bursts.

Light Machine Gun (Specialist) - Less than manoeuvrable in close quarters, the LMG is most effective for medium range engagements and heavy suppression from fixed positions.

Shotgun (Assault and Specialist) - Lethal at short range, much less effective as range increases. The perfect weapon for the aggressive close-quarters combat player.

Submachine Gun (Recon) - A snappy, quick response weapon with moderate accuracy and low damage. It is the premier rapid-fire close-quarters weapon.

Sniper Rifle (Recon) - High damage, high accuracy, ideal for longer range engagements. For the finesse players who have the skill and patience to line-up that perfect shot.

Pistol (all Classes) – When things get hairy and there is no time to deploy the primary weapon, the pistol is the backup of choice.

As you level up your Class characters, you will unlock more weapons within each category.

    Weapon Customization and Attachments
Weapons in GRO can be customized and upgraded with various attachments. These weapon attachments will change the weapon’s characteristics and/or give it new functions. An attachment is destroyed when replaced by another. Weapon attachments can be purchased in the Store, or acquired via loot.

There are 4 categories of Weapon Attachments in GRO:

Scopes - Scopes with higher magnifications help players to identify and accurately engage targets at longer ranges.

Barrels - Barrel lengths affect characteristics like stability, recoil, accuracy and damage.

Magazines - Upgraded magazines give weapons larger ammunition capacities.

Stocks - Stocks affect recoil and weapon ready times.

    Store
To enhance and customize your GRO experience, you can purchase a variety of game items from the in-game Store. Each item has a Requisition Point (RP) price, and you will need to use the Requisition Points (RP) that you’ve earned to purchase the item.

    Game Mode
There is currently 1 game mode in GRO, called “Capture” mode.

In “Capture” mode, 2 opposing teams will attempt to capture and hold 5 of strategic points across the battlefield. Each team starts the game controlling 2 strategic points, with 1 neutral strategic point in the middle.

A team wins by holding a majority of the strategic points at the end of the 15 minute round. A team that captures and holds all 5 points will win automatically.

    Stances and Movement
A Ghost can change stances to suit the combat situation:
    • Standing
    • Crouch (press “C”)
    • Prone (press “CTRL”)
Each stance has its pros and cons in terms of target size, movement speed and weapon accuracy.

A Ghost can also walk (default movement speed), sprint (press “Shift” to toggle), roll when prone, and slide (press “Space” when sprinting)

    Taking Cover
When the bullets are zipping by, moving fast and taking cover will be key to survival.

GRO has a highly flexible cover system – just hit “Space” when near cover (e.g. wall), and your Ghost will move into cover. You can also move along, peek and fire over and around the cover too.

You can also climb over cover by hitting “E”.
