Now, hmmm, let me see. Haven't read anything poetic in <STRIKE>years</STRIKE> decades. I like Henry David Thoreau, John Steinbeck, Shakespeare, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, Hemingway and several others.
As for Music, well, there's just too many to name. Just about any of the original Big Bands, the Ink Spots, Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, Richard Rogers, Burt Bacharach, George Gershwin, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Strauss, Felix Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Paganini, Schubert, Chopin, Handel, Liszt, DeBussy, Vivaldi, Massenet, Samuel Barber, and then of course, there's all the Classic/Modern Rock. Way too many to name with music.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Favorite singers/songwriters: ACDC, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (mainly for I love Rock N Roll), Survivor, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels and many, many more.

Favorite authors: H. G. Wells, Gordon Korman (for his series work that I used to read), James Bradley (Flags of Our Fathers), and many other ones I can't think to mention, mostly who have written odd works that I just happened to have read.

Favorite poets: Not really into poetry...

For me (if you haven't noticed) I don't really have a "favorite" in any category, I have more of a "favorite works" category. It's more about certain works (songs or what have you) rather than the creator of that particular work.

Favourite Singer: Me Mum (and Cleo Lane)
Favourite Author: Me Daughter (and E "Doc" Smith)
Favourite Poet: Me Dad (and Banjo Patterson)

    An example:

    “Cold Courage”

There’s one season of the year,
    That really leaves me cold,
    It’s when winter comes around,
    I know I’m getting old.

When chilly winds, turn rain to sleet,
And heaters seem to lose their heat,
With chilly hands, and stone cold feet,
Your nose is frozen, like a lump of meat,
Ears that are red from loss of heat,
    I can’t get warm, I face defeat,
“Somehow” I can stand all this,
But one thing has me beat,
To find the ‘nerve’ to sit down,
On an ‘ice cold’ toilet seat.

Most of his poems have a bit of humour in them.
    Here's another:

    A Horse's Tale.

The man from snowy river never shifted in his seat ,
It was good to see a horseman, with clean shoes upon his feet,
They had a good appearance, they were polished to a gloss,
They matched the polished crupper, on the saddle of his horse.

He was fussy with the crupper, he cleaned it without fail,
He thought it only proper, when he raised the horse's tail,
And this brought back memories, of a girl he used to know,
He didn’t remember her surname, her Christian name was Flo.

He wondered why he thought of her, when the crupper was in place,
Was something he was looking at, remind him of her face,
But then he knew the answer, to the memory that was there,
The long thick horses tail, was like her flowing raven hair

You might think this a bummer of a rhyme,
But you see funny bottoms all the time
Some are as flat as a bitumen street,
Some are like two boys, fighting under a sheet.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The aggressive insistence on the worth and unique importance of the common man seems to me to be one of the fundamental Australian characteristics - Hartley Grattan Experience is the art of not making the same mistake too many times.
