Thread: Why does Radar do half it's job? | Forums

at least in my experience thus far...

for the few, if any, who don't know... Radar is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging... it's concept is nearly identical to sonar (SOund Navigation And Ranging) only instead of sound waves, Radar transmits radio waves to the target, and calculates the distance to the target by measuring the time it takes for the radio pulse to bounce back...

one difference between sonar and radar illustrated in this game is the need to change range settings on the radar... or change the PRF, Pulse Repetition Frequency.

all that **** said... I havent seen what radar does besides spit out bearings in game...

the Radioman position is flawed in my opinion because he doesn't give out ranges and has no command to ask him for any either... so upon my first confirmed contact with the FuMO 30 (2nd Radar set, 1st with 360 degree scanning) I switched myself into the Radio room to see if I could figure it out myself... but I couldn't get a return pointing the radar in the direction the radioman called (understanding that the bearings on the Radar wheel are reversed) tried both the reversed bearing, the bearing as illustrated on the wheel, and the reciprocals of both just to be sure and still nothing

the scope in game looks to be an A-scope, the squiggly lines in the middle will spike outward when a radar return comes back with a tgt... the numbers on either side represent the ranges, whatever number the spike points to is the range depending on what PRF you have it set to....

Not seeing spikes at targets I can see at decent distance could be a bug... could be my end somehow, or maybe the scope in game is only eye candy and doesnt work manually... I doubt that so I want to know if anyone has been using the A-Scope in game manually and getting it to work?

also my 2 cents that radiomen need "Follow closest target" and "Get range to target" commands :P

I'm assuming you're playing with automap update off? If it's on, when a radar contact is detected it will place the icon on the map, for a few seconds anyway. It gives you a little too much info that way, though, since it will correctly identify ship/plane type, and heading, and even enemy/neutral/friendly status, but it does allow you to find out the range of the contact. The only other way I know to do it is man the station manually. The rollover numbers on the bottom left will give you the range in meters to the contact while it's on the display.
