Thread: Johnnie Johnson's Spitfire for FBS | Forums

    G'day FBS

Hope you find this. Here is the image we spoke of. See how you go but like I said, please don't go to any trouble.

    This is the book's jacket[IMG:left] [/IMG]

Anyway, looking eargely forward to all your new skins including the Tempest MkV and Mustang.

PLEASE NOTE: If anyone else should read this:

I'm searching for a picture/s of one of Johnnie Johnson's earlier Spit's with "BADER's BUS Co STILL RUNNING" painted on one of the upper left engine cowls (I believe it was a MkVb).

Any other details or information pertaining to this Aircraft's rego, camouflage, colours and markings would also be a big help.

An image is available from ww2images however the site is a $pay site. I only need some images and details for skinning reference.

    Thanks

    Hi HA,

Johnson flew with 616 Sqn at this time, their codes were'YQ'; as for a/c ID letter and serial I have found no sources that expand on these but I'm still hunting! Was gonna do this skin myself

    Good luck old chap!

"YOU BLOODY BEAUTY" - Struth mate, for a minute there I was beginning to wonder if you'd forgotten about your number one fan.

Almost took you off the christmas list. Even had a snag waiting on the BBQ for you but I guess you've been busy pumping out those P-51's, P-47 and what's with those 109's...... absolute rippa's mate.

See how you go, I've managed to get hold of a few other images but they're average at best.

    I'll set them here

    Number 14 is his

Let me know how you go but don't spend any time on it if you can't get the colour scheme sorted. Its been difficult to find any reference to his older MkVb. I'm not sure about the colours but know doubt you'll come up with something. Others have done his later model Mk IV but I was chasing a Mk Vb.

Found these details regarding the colour scheme:

MK.Vb W3457 flown by Flying Officer James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson of No. 616 Sqn, RAF Tangmere in August 1941 and it's paint scheme was Dark Earth/Dark Green over sky. The Tail band and spinner are sky in colour. "Bader's Bus Co., Still Running" nose art.

Found this website also which may be handy if you decide to do some other Spit's:

    http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/f/52/9/11

They have some good reference's for artwork (not sure about this RLM I've seen on some skins). Any type of Spitfire with your talents should be great no doubt.

Anyway mate, better get going. Hope this one comes off.

    Cheers

    G'day Kristorf,

Fly by Shooter has assured me that it is on his "to do" list. No doubt he will have a crack at it when he gets time and the required information to do a top class job.

If you can provide any reference material or images etc that would be a great help. I know of a number of skins already available of GP Capt Johnson's later model Spits. His MkV from the earlier Tangmere days is what I'm after.

Thanks for the post and like I said, any information you may have to assist in getting this skins done will be great.

    Cheers

    Heavensabove,
If you can get hold of 'Wing Leader'. published in 1956 and still available, published by Goodall, you will find more info.
It is Johnsons autobiography and is a very iteresting read, going from his near 'wash-out' in training to the end of WWII.

Also of interest is 'Winged Victory'by Johnson and W/Comm P B 'Laddie' Lucas, published by Stanley Paul.
Again this is a collection of memories from WWII by two respected leaders and aces.

    Hope info useful.

Hey hey, cheers for the info Chris & Tom, much appreciated, Chris do you have a profile of the earlier Spit you mention or a reasonable pic at least, may as well do them both while I'm at it, the original Spit I said I would do is near completion, Im just messing with new techniques for panel lines & weathering on it, (Looks kinda funkee too )so 'Heavens' me ole fruit bat, your Spit should be done before weekends out, will 'E' you as soon as...Okies....thanks Chris in advance....Best regards FBS

    G'day Lads

    Kristorf:

I've just finished reading "Wing Leader". What a story hey, an excellent read and highly recommended. Thanks for the reference to the other one though. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I'm reading Sir Basil Embry's "Mission Completed" - All about Mosquito pilot's and missions such as Operation Jericho. So far, so good. Would love a Mossie in IL2.

It looks as though Fly by's got things in hand so I guess we'll just have to wait. No doubt it will be worth it! Hopefully Flying Legends will be on-line again soon.

Thanks again m8 for the post though.

Just a qucik one: I was wondering how you get the little image under your name in the left hand column when you list a post? Can anyone have one?

    Fly by Shooter:

Take your time mate with the Spit, I know your busy so no rush, give me something even Johnnie would be proud to fly. Get it done when you can but it sounds as though things are progressing nicely.

It's great to see and read comments from the wider IL2 community acknowledging your work - overdue hey. Some great wraps about the P-51 internals layer.

Anyway mate, I've still got a few Kangaroo steaks left to throw the BBQ for you when you visit the land downunder.

Did you work out what "Bump" means? I think it's where someone replies to a post just so it's back on top of the list and more people will therefore see and read it....I think

    Cheers.
