First off, I wanted to thank all the people who have offered assistance on this thread!
All the tips on how to patch the Gold Version of the game to version 1.71 made it run without any issues.
While I'm not presenting any new information here, I hope this recap will help anyone still having issues with the retail DVD-ROM Gold Edition of the game.
The CD Key is printed inside the DVD Case on the Settlers 6/Silent Hunter paper insert (it's on the Silent Hunter side of the insert at the very bottom of the paper). While the CD Key is not needed to install the software, it is needed if/when you create a multiplayer account for online play.
Activation Code - As far as I can tell, this is not needed for the Gold Version of the game which is version 1.6.4287. The activation was a requirement of the TAGES copy protection which was removed starting in patch version 1.6. The Game Menu Screen that has an entry field for it probably should have been removed in the code that patches the game. I'm guessing it was probably an oversight. Just don't put anything into the field and you shouldn't have an issues.
Patching - To patch the Gold Version to version 1.71 (which is highly recommended), just go into
the THE SETTLERS - Rise of an Empire\base\bin folder and extra\bin folder (for the Easterm Realm addon) and remove OR rename the S6Patch.ini. It's read only, but you should be able to remove that property by right clicking on the file and uncheck the read only attribute.
Once that' done, you can update using the 1.71 patch.
I installed and patched to 1.71 before ever loading the game, and it launched and has been running without any problems. I would say that anyone who is having issues, back-up your save games, uninstall the entire game. Reinstall but don't run the game, and then patch immediately to 1.71
