Thread: Few questions from a first-time poster | Forums

  1. #1
I've read through the forums up to page 19 today (first day I played the game), os please forgive me if I asked something that was previously asked.

What does the 'speed' switch in the F6 screen do? p17 at the bottom of the manual has about one line to describe it - but fails miserably.

I'm not sre if I am doing it right (picked up the idea from the forum), but every now and again I stop and use the 'L' function (forgot it's name - searching a 360 circle with sound for other ships). I can't see a way to add a protractor or any equivalent angle measuring device which you can use to point the direction the enemy is from your course. I use the ruler to extend my position and the enemy's from their current couse and then try to intercept. I can't find an accurate way to see what angle they are from me (at present I am holding a bit of paper up to the screen)

In the career mode, you are to patrol a grid for an hour - fine, but is there a way to end the mission? Do you just press 'esc' or do you have to sail all the way back into the dock?

I currently haven't installed any patched due to feedback I have read here - which should I install and what do they fix compared to the new 'bugs' they spawn?

What does the radar operator do? I can't get him to identify targets, or anything else for that matter? Am I missing something?

The problem of seeing a haze of white when looking through the bincos straight ahead, or behind - I heard that there is a solution to press ctrl(or shift, I forget)+p, but this does nothing for me. Again, am I missing something?[/list]
    Cheers!

The speed setting is the speed of the torpedo. Not all torpedoes support this though, in which case the knob will be locked on slow.
    Higher speed = lower range.
Press I and select a torpedo to view details on it.

I use the L-method myself for searching for ships my sonarman has discovered. It's possible to briefly select ships that are 30kms away. There are several map tools mods available. I use the "360 Degree Bearing Plotter for Navigation Map" available here .

You patrol your grid for 24 hours to gain renown. When you're done, you may press Esc and choose Return to base. However, if you return to within ~15kms of your base, press Esc and choose Dock at.. <harbour> you will gain a little more in renown.

I think you should install patch 1.2. The latest one is 1.3, but in this version the watch officer and sonarman are mute.

    Welcome!

Get patch 1.2 (at the very least). There is a fix (Ctrl+P) and needs to only be done once to loading of the game. I usually do it in the harbor before I even star tthe engines to get rid of it. It may take a few seconds to work, it really clocks the machine.

The radar operator operates the radar.
You need to wait until 1942 (if memory serves me right), when the first U-boat radar set is available, and then install it (if you have the renown).

    Ah, that makes sense.
I've only been playing 1939 so far.
