Well it's simple on a Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz with 1 GB ram and 1650x PRO (roughly 7600 gt) I get 0-2 fps on that map size. I did not even and a turn let alone play the whole map.

I have a core 2 duo, 8 Gb of RAM and an 8800 Ultra (going to SLI 2 here soon)...and while I can run an impossible map just fine, when the AI is trying to take its turn it just goes to hell.

Hmmm ... it looks like Nival's engine is the definition of odd [flaky??].

I have played an impossible size map with hotseat settings [just one human] and while it doesn't run well at all it does run and I was able to run the map for several months of game time:

    CPU: Sempron 2800+
    Mem: 1 GB
    Vid: SiS built-in ****
    Ver == H5 ver 1.5

Of course with my "craptop" I lowered all possible video settings to their minimum value and even then the load times were very nearly "unplayable" but once that worked I could get by.

The reason that I say that the engine is flaky is that a system with MUCH more CPU & Video horsepower should run substantially better but they don't.

I would rank the game engine along with the AI / map editor / documentation as some of UBI/Nival's biggest failings with H5 core [IMHO].

King Alamar, as far as I'm aware impossible size maps are only available in the Tribes expansion.

This is two sizes larger than extra large.

What map are you referring to?

In that case nevermind. I didn't realize that they had 2 map sizes larger than the old extra-large ["too large for you"] sized maps.

With the map size scaling issues that I've seen I'm not surprised that those maps don't play well.

    ---------------------------------------------

What are the sizes of extra-large, XXL, and "impossible"??

    tiny 72 x 72
    small 96 x 96
    medium 136 x136
    large 176 x 176
    extra-large 216 x 216
    huge 256 x 256
    impossible 320 x 320

My point is that it's a phony accomplishment. I seriously wonder whether Nival can play such a map on their development computers.

Actually you could make custom maps that large in HoF with a program. But it only ran ok for a couple of month, then the AI just got so slow it didn't work at all.

At the moment I'm playing an RMG impossible size map and it's decent going. But, I only have half of the map explored at the moment so it could get worse.

I have a core 2 duo 1.8 (I think, I'm too lazy to look it up) 1 gig ram and a NVIDIA 7600.
I have image quality normal, anti-aliasing off, atmospheric filtering (I think it was called) off.

Loading a saved game takes about 2-3 minutes, and the turns of the enemy players take about just as long (all turns combined, so not every enemy player taking 2 minutes.)

I normally have the TV on when I play so I don't really notice the waits that much since I use that time to watch some TV, but if I had to play and then wait I think the waiting would drive me wild.

So, while I only have half of the map explored, it does look like I can finish the map.
But the real question here is if you want to. Mind you, I was one of the people that was shouting for bigger maps with H5, but I tell you, simply because the size of this map I'm getting bored with it.

I mean, it's almost a must to tweak the hero just for fast movement to at least move a little bit decent over the map. My two main heroes both have expert logistics, and both have those boots of swift travel, or however they are called, that make you move faster over land, and on top of that one of them has an ability that negates rough terrain... and yet with all of that it still takes over 5 turns just to get back to the town.

I think that the impossible size maps are possible to finish, yet at the same time impossible to finish because you get bored and move on long before you finished the entire map.
