Thread: Question about Guitar hero. | Forums

  1. #1
So one of my cousins wants another guitar controller for xmas for this game, and while I'm entirely down with that, I have NO idea if the guitars are game specific or are universal. Any one able to help me out on this?

It's the Wii 'World Tour' release.

First, you need to buy a controller made for the specific system (Wii, in this case).

Second, all newest games are backwards compatible with previous hardware, but older hardware is not necessarily forward compatible with the newer games. For example, the Guitar Hero World Tour game will recognize previous Guitar Hero Wii controllers, but the latest World Tour game has a new guitar with new features, as does the Rock Band style guitars.

So, in summary, the latest offerings (Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 1-2) use newer features and require the newer peripherals, but will recognize older peripherals, although the older peripherals do not have the latest game feature buttons.

The only thing you lose with older guitars is the tap/slide portion of the fret that is on the newer ones. It's not required that you use the new fret so you can just play it "old school" (which I do anyway b/c I suck).

Exactly. I use my Rock Band guitar for GH1-GH3 and Rock Band, but as you state above, the tap buttons for leads is only used in Rock Band (or the fret slide in GH4), but my older GH2 guitar works well with Rock Band, you just have to strum the leads instead of tapping them.

Before I got it I said the same thing. My ex-wife wanted it so I got it for her. 7 hours after firing it up I finally quit playing for the evening.

"True" musicians would find it lame but for those of us born without talent it's a blast.

IMO, it's just another form of entertainment.

Not everybody wants to learn how to play a guitar over years of practice. It's a fun group game, introduces kids to music they might not have heard before, especially the older tracks in the game, and it gives people without musical talent a chance to feel like they are playing. And some may even go on to study the guitar as a result of being exposed to the game.

The same way this game gives Computer Potatos the chance to fly a plane. Why do people play simulators? Because they do not have the chance or the time or the money, etc. to fly a real plane, I guess.

Even though I've been a drummer and keyboardist for 35+ years, I love playing that game with my kids. It's cool to see an 8 year old whipping out solos in Free Bird or Green Grass and High Tides on Hard level.

Even though one is not actually playing, the dexterity required for the game can get pretty intense on Hard and Expert.

I can play a lot of the songs that are featured on the Guitar Hero and Rockband series on a real guitar, and many of them I've played in bands for fun.

I can attest that GH and RB are fun even for musicians. They are a totally different interface, so just because you can play a killer "Back in Black" on your SG, it doesn't mean that you can on the controller....
