Thread: german mod? please? | Forums

i would love to play the germans in a lot of games like BiA or CoD2 or MoH.
i mean, why not? because they lost? because they were nazis? [they weren't nazis... they were german... nazis were just a few].

if we can play russians [soldiers of an evil dictatorship but NOT themselves evil... though, er, they did rape an awful lot of german and polish women as well as butchering them, too, but that's another story, right?] then why not germans?
i'm very much interested and play these games for the personal stories of soldiers fighting.
why not as german? isn't it time we stopped thinking of '1940s german' as 'nazis'?
also, i have to say, i am so bored of playing US paras. please god can we have a game where you aren't forced to play a US para? it's been so overdone now. time for a bloody change!

    das

EDIT: could it be that i am the only person that thinks like this? surely not?

the German Front Mod claims to build a German view mod for Cod2... but I strongly doubt they will...

but you're right... you can play Germans in many games, but mostly strategy, flight or uboat simulation... in shooters only multiplay. No idea, why nobody creates it, since most players want to play Germans

Yeah, a German mod would be fun, but not too historicaly accurate; for example:

You would want to make the game fun, but almost every time you went on a mission you got your *** kicked and kept on having to retreat. So, you make the missions so that the Germans win, right? For example, you make it so that the D-Day invasion is repelled. That's not accurate, but it's fun to be sitting in a concrete MG nest and blast people into the ocean! However, it wouldn't be fun to have them blast a hole in the seawall and shoot you in the ***, would it? NO!!! That's why the game can't be too accurate without taking away the fun; Here's another one:

You're in the Battle of the Bulge. it's fun to command the tank and blast into that town on an MG42 all day, but then all of a sudden the Americans and Patton's third army start their counterattack and shoot you through the head or you retreat. Not too fun, is it? I mean, you could do Market Garden, but I don't know about the whole thing in general: what if you want to make a series? What if there's thirty games out there about Market Garden?

The concept is good, but you have to look at things in the long run: the Germans lost the war, and you can't make people play a game where they wind up being a POW or they die. It would be like playing Madden 2006 when you know your team is going to loose anyway!

I think a game based on the German point of veiw would be ground breaking. Political and ethical conflicts could errupt for some though I suppose.
Most should know they were'nt all a bunch of fanatic Nazis and many themselves were bothers in arms too and have a story to tell.
I often wonder how German WWII vets are treated. Over here US vets are like heroes. But do the German ones get that sort of reconition and respect too? I mean even most times the Allied soldiers didn't fight for politics but more for his fellow soldiers. Would that be any different for the Germans for the most part?
There would be plenty of material to work with to make a game series on the German side. It wasn't just a cake walk though the whole war for the Allies. There were many battles and skirmishes that the Germans won.
The US didn't come out victorious in Vietnam and there are plenty of Vietnam games out there that worked. So since the Germans lost the war I don't think this alone would make any difference on how successful a game from their point of view would be.
The main problem is the general pubic acceptance of such a game. It is a large pubic notion that WWII Germans and Nazis were just an evil lot that had to be destroyed. Games have always focused on "blowing away the evil Nazis". Forgetting that many of them had personal stories of men that were pulled away from thier lives and thrown into this war. They have just as many stories on thier side as there are on the Allied side.
The problem is that the many that became evil like the SS death squads etc. and the goal of their war makes it hard for anyone to want to invest on telling thier story even in movies. But in reality most were probably just fighting for their country like the rest. In fact they probably felt they had to fight for their own homes and families near the end.
I guess being half German myself with my father fighting for the Allies in a Sherman tank who married the first WWII German warbride with three brothers fighting for the Germans, I am kind of forced to try to see things with a deeper understanding from thier point of view then those who didn't have relatives on both sides.

as far as being on the losing side if you play as german, thats not completly accurate.germany fought alot of other countries besides the u.s. and kicked the snot out of most of them. a game playing as the germans i think would work, and if u wanted to be on the winning side, the game could focus on the first part of the war. it wouldnt have to be against the u.s. after d-day,would it?
