Thread: Driver Update Dxdiag. | Forums

  1. #1
    Can any take a look and tell me what my current motherboard chipset driver is?

    Also, is my CPU driver up-to-date and what other drivers I need to update? Thanks

    Very kind.

    I'm attempting to learn.

    I still cannot figure out or find research on how you were able to get that information from my dxdiag.

    I'll continue to research elsewhere. Thanks again

    In many cases neither can the rest of us ( figure out "exactly" where they get all the info from a Dxdiag ). But then, we haven't studied all that is on the MS developer's website about Dxdiag (not enuf time, too much info, make livings in non-computer-related fields).
    That's why, if it isn't immediately obvious ( from own past experience or other Dxdiags posted here), we post here for the mods and other experienced technicians to figure it out for us, do what they suggest, and it almost always works out well - eventually.
    No one who doesn't do this for-a-living can possibly keep up with it all. So, unless a suggested fix draws a rapid "Whoa! That's way off base!" response it will likely at least get you into the ballpark. ( Best to not implement suggested "fixes" immediately - unless it's an obvious no-brainer - till there's been time for a few more responses. If not, or if others are similar, then "go for it". )
    The "moderators" will never steer you wrong and many of the regulars ( you'll get to know who they are over time )are really reliable too.
    If one doesn't understand the steps suggested, a "How do I" (do that) is more appropriate here than a "Why do I" (do that).
    In many cases "No One" knows "exactly" why a solution works here (especially for graphical display problems - even nVidia with the current lack of a fix for their latest drivers is the most obvious example) and given all the possible conflicts with millions of lines of code in the Operating System, Game, other applications loaded and maintaining active processes, and all the possible hardware configurations and memory allocations therewith "trying the suggestions" is about all that is possible ( especially with the latest-greatest hardware that hasn't had a long-term shakedown in this game or others ).
    That's why there is a "Sticky thread" at the top of this forum titled "User suggestions that may help others".
    Remember, this forum is all "user" contributions and no one ( including the Mods ) gets a dime for the time spent here.
    Ubi provides server space and a wire (or fibre optics cable) and that's the extent of their investment.

    Very good points.

    I'm doin the best I can to take advice and do my own research and use things from the forum as they are intended. To help me succeed.

    I just want folks to know I'm not makin this stuff up in my sleep. I went the recommended MSI website and asked the question if I had updated my MSI MB NVIDIA system driver, if I needed to update my CPU driver also. Here is the tech support response:

    "Dear Customer,

    You would need to update the cpu driver also, here is a link for the latest cpu driver.

    http://download.msi.com.tw/support/d...DCPU_VP001.zip

    Sincerely,

    Now, I just want to say this. Without folks' here encouragement and input, I'd have never been able to come up with my kickxxx system. And without everyone's patience, I'd never made it this far with things.

    It seems to me the more research I do, the more conflicting info. I get. That is part of the reason I have such difficulty figurin'out which step to take next. Just wanted you to know why.

    I understand no one is paid and all are tryin to help. I'm grateful. But, not bein an pro at this stuff, I'm also still confused about lots I read and such.

    I think I'll try some things out. I suspect I'll have to find out several times how well Norton Ghost and Windows Restore work. Maybe not, but maybe.

    Appreciate the help. I'll try to wait and come back when I've got things squared away better.

    Thanks again

    All the drivers, including your chipset drivers, are listed under System Devices. Now, figuring out which is what is another thing. Like you, I am still learning.

    Possibly one of the reasons you are getting conflicting info is because you start new posts which spread info all over the place. It is difficult for others and yourself to keep track of suggestions this way. If everything was in one post then people can see earlier recommendations and comment on these. Another possible cause is that no-one will have all the necessary knowledge you seek so bits and pieces will come from those who have expertise in certain areas. Different people and companies can have different terms for the same thing so as steve v suggested you need to understand basics to fully understand the answers to some of the more technical questions you ask. check out the optimisation guide in my sig - it gives basic descriptions on computers and games -or check out some of the books available.

    I admire your patience in this process, had it been me I would have desperate to get the new rig running and PF working right away.

    Yea. It's been a challenge keeping up all the different threads and topics. I know I have answered the same question more than once in some of the different threads you have started. Dieg777 has a great point in asking that you stick with a particular thread and just ask the different types of questions in that one thread. If you hadn't noticed, it has been the same several m8s that have been posting in each of your threads. So it would be better for you, and the m8s trying to help, if you would start a thread and stick with it, even if the subject matter changes.

    And I also commend you on your patience and your efforts in trying to understand so many different aspects of computing. I S! you sir!

    I'm with Dieg and Quazi on the 'multiple threads' issue, your patience however is admirable!

    Re: determining the chipset driver version from the dxdiag.

    nVidia helpfully post the driver versions with the chipset package on the download page.

    6.66 for instance:
    Windows XP Driver Versions

    * Audio driver 4.62 (WHQL)
    * Audio utilities 4.51
    * Ethernet driver 4.82 (WHQL)
    * Network management tools version 4.88
    * SMBus driver 4.45 (WHQL)
    * NVIDIA PATA RAID driver 5.34
    * NVIDIA SATA RAID driver 5.34 (WHQL)
    * NVIDIA SATA IDE driver 5.34 (WHQL)
    * NVIDIA RAID Application 4.82
    * Installer 4.78

    Comparing this to your dxdiag, taking the nForce4 Parallel ATA driver as an example:

    Name: NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller
    Device ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0053&SUBSYS_71251462&REV_A2\3&241 1E6FE&0&30
    Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nvata.sys, 5.10.2600.0534 (English), 5/17/2005 17:45:08, 92800 bytes
    Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\idecoi.dll, 1.00.0000.0001 (English), 5/17/2005 17:45:10, 300032 bytes

    The bit in bold on line 3 is nVidias way of describing the version (in this case it matches the current 6.66 driver contents).

    Your system, like mine, does not appear to have the SMBus driver installed. I have yet to research why this is so, it may be intentional and I'm open to advice myself on it!

    And this is one of the parts of the above section that deals with my latest MB driver?

    Name: NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller

    AND here is the part that talks to the driver version?

    Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nvata.sys, 5.10.2600.0534 (English), 5/17/2005 17:45:08, 92800 bytes

    Now to check the version number is up to date, I should go online w NVIDIA or MSI and look at the updates included in the latest version and see if it matches this for the "NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller" from the update and see if it matches the same controller on my current dxdiag. I'm assuming that this is just one of several item that could be checked this way. VERY COOL!!!!!!!

    I have noticed it has been the same group helping me along. It will someday be a great honor to take long range newbe potshots at you in the air someday.

    In honor of your patience and requests, (which you have been made before), I will cut off the threads amap. I'll not ratioinalize here.

    I'm moving ever closer to uthopia. I'm not there, but I can smell it from here.

    Thanks for the help. I learned alot on this thread.
