Thread: Crash while starting game | Forums

    I believe this is directly related to resolutions supported & reported by the nVidia driver per monitor...

    The error message I got was something along the lines of resolution not supported...

    It did change the video resolution to the reported resolutions successfully, dispite the report of "CODE: E_FAIL".
    Using 3D-Analyze to force software TnL or emulate HW TnL caps, the "CreateVertexBuffer failed" problem no longer occurred (because of the software vertex buffer ?) and I was able to play the game somewhat.

    Playing HoMM with software TnL only gives ~8 frames per second at lowest qualities.

    I can switch to a CRT or another LCD monitor, and completely resolve the problem, and play as normal.

    Using a large widescreen LCD TV as a monitor (limited to 1280x768p 32bpp resolution) causes the issue.

    Switching back and forth, I can perfectly duplicate the problem & same error messages.

    I have a GeForce 6800 GT 256mb, have tried all recent 8x.xx forceware drivers, including beta ones, up to 84.25.

    I'm absolutely certain I've ruled out audio, CPU, and background processes, as possible interference.

    In the mean time, I'll have to use a different, albeit smaller, monitor.

    Good luck fellas... I think a few other people have had the same problem as I have.

    [edit]
    I don't know if this is purely unique to nVidia consumers or not.
    There doesn't appear to be any particularly unique activity from the driver towards HoMM5.
    Every other monitor I have tried that works supports 1280x1024 and higher..

    I see "FULLSCREEN: 1" there, is it possible to force windowed mode by adding something to a config file?
    [/edit]

    [edit=2]
    tried "setvar gfx_fullscreen = 0"
    No effect.
    [/edit]

    [edit=3]
    Going to see if having 2 monitors at once has any effect.
    [/edit]

    [edit=4]
    Great, now I get it no matter what monitor I use. Sorry guys.
