Thread: Hunting area for Typ. II boats | Forums

  1. #1
    For thoes of you who have the type II U-Boat, the "Duck" Boats. If you run up and down the coast at about 30-40km off shore. But a more fule effincet method os to sit in on spot(my faveroite is off Hartelpool) 30-40km off shore. If your sitting in one spot dive during the day for sonar searches. If you like move your postion 30km a day for more area covered.

    Good Luck and Good Hunting.

    Its the same way I put it in the Community manual.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

    I found a good spot just north of Hartlepool thats good probably about 100km north. Right in the path of on going shipping traffic.

    In this screenie, just above the H in Hartlepool.

    I always ran my patrol at ahead slow ranging from Scapa Flow to just above Dover. I could always make two trips and generally found my fair share of single merchants hugging the coastline. Hartlepool is good to sit just outside of, so is the inlet to Firth of Forth. Another really good spot is just east of Scapa flow, I call it "the bottleneck". If you want more time along the coast, wait until Sept. 1940 and get the IID. It can go as far as a Type VIIC at ahead slow otherwise the IIA is a prime choice.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

    Under GWX and Stock the IId is available from October 1939. But, as far as I am concerned, the IId is a very good little boat. It dives fast, and it has a darn good range, I was able to go from Wilhelmshaven to the north Atlantic in mine! And have enough fuel still to make it back to port without using exit patrol.

    Being so small its a very hard target to spot, especially at night. It isn't the fastest ship in the fleet, but you can get the engine upgrades for it. The amount of time it can stay down is not good either, but there are a number of positives with them.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

    Funny how GWX has sparked a IId revival :-) Or is it just that everyone has started a new campaign?

    I got caught by the qualities of that little U-boot too. Having some fun in the North Sea...

    Thanks for the tips on good locations. 30-40 km east of Lowesoft (west side of grid AN 82) is nice too... if the weather helps out.

    I agree with Demigod151 concerning the TypeIID: ?It has become my favorite boat.

    Quick diving, quick turning, and generally handy! It?s small size makes it a difficult ASDIC target, and it has an inconspicuous surface profile.

    I?m not sure if it was intentionally modeled, but in several depth-chargings, I have gotten the impression that the TypeIID shares a characteristic with some of the really small boats like the Seehund: ?..Near depth charge detonations seem to push the whole boat bodily sideways, (watch in external view) rather than ?staving in? small areas of hull plating.

    Another operational consideration is that with the limited number of torpedoes, patrols tend to be short, efficient sorties, rather than ?epic voyages?: ??The consequence being that your crew stays relatively fresh, and never suffers the ?deep fatigue? that you sometimes have to deal with on a TypeIX cruise.

    One small mod that I do heartily recommend (?and NO, this is not a ?Socko Mod!?) is tweaking the 20mm values just enough to reflect reality. In the game, the 20mm is useless against ships, ?..which is NOT historically accurate!

    Use ?Mini Tweaker? or one of the other hex-editing programs to go into SHELLS.ZON and change the 20mm values as follows:

    MinEF = 2
    MaxEF = 7
    MinRadius = 1
    MaxRadius = 3

    There is no statistical magic about these numbers; ?.They were derived empirically: ??..I simply played with the values until 250 ? 300 rounds of 20mm would sink a 1900 ton small merchant more than 50% of the time. (Having spent time with both .50 cal and 20mm ?heavies?, I feel that this is a more correct performance level for the 20mm weapons in the game.)

    This mod will allow your TypeIID the option of three or four small sinkings by gunfire, ?.which allows you to reserve your torpedoes for larger targets: ?..It makes a big difference in your scores at the end of a patrol!

    (Later in the War, you will find that a twin 20mm, operating at a realistic performance level, is the perfect tool for surgically "removing" a merchant's gun installation before they can get to you!)

    Ah so that is where my little U-3 went. I hope you are taking good care of her!

    Some good points re: the type II particularly the turning.

    They turn on a penny they do! also there lies another point of interest, a IId at 150m going silent speed would be a very very difficult target to locate. I forgot what klcarroll there mentioned, they are a difficult ping with ASDIC too.

    The IIa is useless, its handy for starting out in to force you to learn the ropes and get things right, but for an actual career in a II then definately go for a IId, in fact I recommended somewhere else that if you like a challenge in your SH3 then play GWX with a Type IId <div class="ev_tpc_signature">

    Yup! ......If you want to cruise the whole of the North Atlantic, you can go with your TypeIX boats; ......but if you want to deal with "The Tommy Menace? , right in his own back yard, you want a TypeIID!
