Thread: Newbie Learning Classroom-How to Use a Message Board Forum | Forums

  1. #21
Hi Nanouk, thought we'd continue the lessons this morning! I just noticed your question here.

To "quote" a post so the info appears directly in your post do the following:

Where the three little icons are in the bottom right corner, the one on the left (little folder with quote marks) next to the "edit" icon (eraser) is how you quote. Simply go to the post you are wanting to quote (for example, your number 8 post), then click it's little quote button. Good message board etiquette is to then delete the parts of the post that you do not wish to quote or are not relevent to your reply just so it doesn't get too long.

Speaking of Forum Etiquette, here are a few tips considered proper on most all forums no matter where you go. They are not necessarily directed at you, just general guidance:

    * Don't reply or post on someone else's behalf. For example, if I ask a question of a specific user I will wait for their answer. It is annoying as hell when someone else comes in and says "I think so-and-so meant such-and-such" like they are speaking for that person. Being a know-it-all is never usually well-received by anyone in a social or support situation!

    * Don't get involved in disussions that you are not educated about. It's a waste of time and forum space! (For example, talking about troubleshooting Macs when you are a novice Windows user and have never touched a Mac is not beneficial to anyone! )

    * Don't start threads in forums where they are not part of the content. For example This is the Myst IV Spoiler forum and if someone comes here strictly asking about their problem installing the game or something, they will be directed to the Technical forum cuz there are others that specialize in providing technial support. If someone has a bug in a game and are referencing content that might be a spoiler, then the Tech people will mark the post or move it here and continue the thread.

    * Don't post judgments or comments to someone regarding their post that should be left to a moderator. Moderators are here for a reason and have been selected and trained by the owners of the site. If you think there is something questionable about their post, use the little Caution icon (the third on the right of the three little ones) and report the post to a Mod.

    * All Caps is considered Shouting and rude. If you want to emphasize something you can use bold or some other method.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'll come back if I think of more!

    good afternoon teacher BulaRae.

For a minute I was confused with the new title for this thread. It is a great idea. In my case even more because I am a slow learner compared to the genious on this site.

I will need some time and re-reading before I understand everything.

Two questions that fast came to mind after this first reading are,

1)after having posted a reply then if I wanted to re-edit and add something above that famous first line: the only I can do it now is to deleted everything and write anew. Is there a better way ?

2)test plus question: re: bold, is this the right way. If it is, it is a good new lesson for me. In this thread, the little tabs above are much easier to read than on some other forums on this site. Due to my poor sight I guess I will have to get a magnifying glass.

thank you again for your patience

p.s. your reply did bring back some memories from my 25 years as a city bus driver. At least a few hundred times a day, we had (if it was in your blood) to give a helping hand to peoples asking for informations or directions. Now I understand why many bus bus drivers had a bad reputation for not helping people. There must have been a bus driver's "etiquette" that nobody ever told me about. No wonder I was seen as the "strange one".

I'm not sure I follow you. When you are editing your own post by selecting the little folder/eraser icon from the lower right corner of the window, you will get your entire post in a window just like when you originally posted it. There should be a scroll bar on the right (just to the right of the white area where you type) and if you push the arrow up or down you can scroll to any part of your post and insert or change text.

If that is not what you're talking about then please try again with a different example of what you are trying to do.

#1 ok lets try this one and think of it as a long post.
and let say I wanted to add a post #1 number above the first line. I bring my cursor to the left of ok.
If I use the up arrow it will not go above, so that #1 would be alone on a new first line. Do I make more sense ?
(the #1 was added after). I am able to do it anywhere else but there.

All you should need to do is click before the #1 to put your cursor there and start typing, or hit return a few times. This will create a few lines of space before the #1. Then either click back in the same place (which is now blank) or use your up arrow key and left arrow key to move the cursor to that spot at the beginning of the post.

You're a riot! I like your willing spirit.

    re: full size picture

no it is not mine but he could well be my young brother. It is somewhat like the image I see every morning in the mirror. There is a legend that everybody has a double on the planet and I have found mine.

The only difference is my hairs are not as white.(yet) and I do not have the same birthmark in the back.

One other thing we have in common is that we like to laugh...a lot! Have you ever seen such a "smiley" ?

I will quote myself: it is better to be underestimated than overestimated. The surprise is always nicer.

    new question about humour.

Do you beleive I use it too much ? No need to be politically correct because nanouk also like "straight talk".

Well, in MY class there can't possibly be such a thing as too much humor!!!

And no, I don't think you're too funny

However, what I have noticed is that when you have kind of a dry wit like you do (and I do too), it can be easily mis-taken if you don't add smileys and such to leave no room for misunderstanding.
