I've heard it's a combination. You press buttons at certain times to make Pey'j do something, the rest of the time he does his own thing, like hitting creatures with his wire cutters.

It's worth noting that at given times during battles, you're forced to help your companion as they tend to get pinned down by various enemies.
They will talk/shout at you during battle depending on the circumstances.. you never really feel your fighting alone...
The battles are neat and definitely a highpoint

The measure of an individual can be difficult to discern by actions alone.
You can also hit them (Not that I've requesting that as that will deplete your Starko's stash) by accident in a fight sometimes. Of course, I just like Pey'j's retort when you hit him =) ( Not me flagnamit!)
