In general,
-- a. Install Myst Masterpiece Edition (MME) to your C: drive.
----- 1. Do NOT install the game to an external drive, either USB or E-SATA.
-- b. Start MME from a fresh boot.
----- 1. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. (Open the
Control Panel, and select
User Accounts. Your User Name should show
Administrators under
Group.)
----- 2. Disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs running in the background.
----- 3. If you have only a software firewall (ZoneAlarm, for example), do NOT disable it!
----- 4. Do NOT run any other programs before starting MME.
-- c. Do NOT boot up with a CD or DVD in the drive.
-- d. If the MME DVD autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- e. Start the game using the MME icon on the Desktop, NOT the menu item on the MME DVD.
Always start MME by doing b through e, above.
Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

1. Update your video, sound, and mouse or touchpad/mouse drivers to the latest 64-bit versions from the appropriate websites, starting with your PC manufacturer's site. (Be certain to download the 64-bit versions and NOT the 32-bit.) Don't automatically assume that you already have the latest drivers - go to the website(s) and check - and be very certain to carefully follow the installation instructions!
2. Run MME specifically as an Administrator.
-- a. Right-click the Desktop MME icon or shortcut, then click on
Run as administrator. (See also

-- b. Start MME by doing steps b through e under "in general", above.
3. Install and properly configure QuickTime 6.5.2, then play MME.
-- a. Uninstall QuickTime using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
----- 1. If you have multiple instances of QuickTime installed, uninstall each one.
-- b. Close back to the Desktop when uninstallation is complete, and install
QuickTime 6.5.2.
-- c. Start QuickTime 6.5.2, and click on
Edit >
Preferences >
QuickTime Preferences >
QuickTime Settings.
-- d. Scroll down to
Video Settings.
----- 1. If it isn't already active, click on the
Safe Mode [GDI Only] radio button to activate it.
----- 2. The
Options radio button should NOT be active, with the settings under it grayed out.
-- e. Close the
QuickTime Settings page, and close QuickTime back to the Desktop.
-- f. Reboot, and start MME by doing "in general" steps b through e, above.
4. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. You may need to try
all of the modes under "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?" See

-- a. You can also make compatibility setting changes manually.
----- 1. Click on <span class="ev_code_BLUE">> To change compatibility settings manually</span> in

----- 2. Various combinations of options are usually necessary.
5. Uninstall MME, then use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter to re-install the game.
-- a. First, uninstall MME using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs utility. (See
Uninstall or change a program for details.)
----- 1. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see
Turn Windows features on or off.
-- b. When uninstallation is complete, reboot, and re-install MME to your C: drive using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. See

-- c. When re-installation is complete, reboot, and start MME by doing steps b through e under "in general", above.
-- d. If MME doesn't start or play properly, again run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
----- 1. Try all of the modes under "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?"
----- 2. Or make compatibility setting changes manually, as described above.
