Thread: Myst Masterpiece Video problems | Forums

1. #1
I downloaded Myst Masterpiece from Steam, and started playing the game. I got confused on what to do, and felt like things weren't working right, and discovered there's supposed to be video sequences I'm not getting (into to game, dude's message to Catherine in fore-chamber, etc). The imager doesn't do anything.

Also, I'm not sure if it's related, but when I went into the library, I clicked on a blue and red page and they disappeared. I have no idea how to access whatever kind of inventory I may have, so no idea how to put the pages in the books. I open the books and they have a black rectangle on the right page that does nothing.

A FAQ said I needed quicktime, so I've downloaded that.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Welcome to the Forums!

In general,
-- a. Install Myst Masterpiece Edition (MME) to your C: drive.
----- 1. Do NOT install the game to an external drive, either USB or E-SATA.
-- b. Start MME from a fresh boot.
----- 1. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. (Open the Control Panel, and select User Accounts. Your User Name should show Administrators under Group.)
----- 2. Disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs running in the background.
----- 3. If you have only a software firewall (ZoneAlarm, for example), do NOT disable it!
----- 4. Do NOT run any other programs before starting MME.
-- c. Do NOT boot up with a CD or DVD in the drive.
-- d. If the MME DVD autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- e. Start the game using the MME icon on the Desktop, NOT the menu item on the MME DVD.

Always start MME by doing b through e, above.

Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

Note - in these Forums any text that's underlined, and sometimes in bold-face type and/or a different color, is a link to another Internet site. Double-left-click on a link to go to its site.

1. Update your video, sound, and mouse or touchpad/mouse drivers to the latest 64-bit versions from the appropriate websites, starting with your PC manufacturer's site. (Be certain to download the 64-bit versions and NOT the 32-bit.) Don't automatically assume that you already have the latest drivers - go to the website(s) and check - and be very certain to carefully follow the installation instructions!

2. Run MME specifically as an Administrator.
-- a. Right-click the Desktop MME icon or shortcut, then click on Run as administrator. (See also How do I run an application once with a full administrator access token?.)
-- b. Start MME by doing steps b through e under "in general", above.

3. Install and properly configure QuickTime 6.5.2, then play MME.
-- a. Uninstall QuickTime using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
----- 1. If you have multiple instances of QuickTime installed, uninstall each one.
-- b. Close back to the Desktop when uninstallation is complete, and install QuickTime 6.5.2.
-- c. Start QuickTime 6.5.2, and click on Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences > QuickTime Settings.
-- d. Scroll down to Video Settings.
----- 1. If it isn't already active, click on the Safe Mode [GDI Only] radio button to activate it.
----- 2. The Options radio button should NOT be active, with the settings under it grayed out.
-- e. Close the QuickTime Settings page, and close QuickTime back to the Desktop.
-- f. Reboot, and start MME by doing "in general" steps b through e, above.

4. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. You may need to try all of the modes under "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?" See Make older programs run in this version of Windows.
-- a. You can also make compatibility setting changes manually.
----- 1. Click on > To change compatibility settings manually in Make older programs run in this version of Windows, and read through all of the options.
----- 2. Various combinations of options are usually necessary.

5. Uninstall MME, then use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter to re-install the game.
-- a. First, uninstall MME using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs utility. (See Uninstall or change a program for details.)
----- 1. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see Turn Windows features on or off.
-- b. When uninstallation is complete, reboot, and re-install MME to your C: drive using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. See Make older programs run in this version of Windows, "If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the troubleshooter...."
-- c. When re-installation is complete, reboot, and start MME by doing steps b through e under "in general", above.
-- d. If MME doesn't start or play properly, again run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
----- 1. Try all of the modes under "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?"
----- 2. Or make compatibility setting changes manually, as described above.

I've tried all of this. I printed out the instructions. I followed the directions to a T. The videos still won't run.

Exclamation Maybe This Will Help... Or Maybe Not.

sneakybandanas,

Best to include your computer model and OS in initial post. If you are running a Windows 7 computer, you will have trouble with Myst Masterpiece and Riven. We had the same problems with video not playing; turned out to be a QuickTime problem. You might want to read this thread, particularly the later posts and the summary of our solution in post #35 on page 4 of that thread.
