ATI 9800 Pro 256 MB
vs
NVIDIA FX 5900 256 MB
im leaning towards the FX 5900 because i like Nvidia and have had no experience with ATI, any input on this?

If you have money to burn, by all means. Me, Im thinking about the 9600pro. Half the price, yet screams.

I would say go for the 9800pro which in my opinion is a better card. Both have great performance but 9800 as better image quality (AA). 5900U suffer from really bad PS2.0 (DX9) performance compared to 9800 which probably will make the 9800 a better card for future DX9 games like Half-Life 2 (of course no one can tell for sure until the game is released).
Another (BIG) reason why I prefer the ATI card is because of the recently driver "optimizations" (cheats) that has been discover. NVidia has been caught cheating in a number of popular benchmark programs (including 3Dmark03,Shadermark) and even game timedemos (UT2k3). ATI was also caught cheating in 3Dmark03 and they removed the optimization with the next driver release but nVidia is not removing the "optimations" from their driver.
Check out this review that doesn't use the normal benchmark programs/games (well execpt for UT2k3):

Yes, ATI was also cheating in 3Dmark03 but they removed the cheat in the next driver update. NVidia as been caught cheating in more than just 3Dmark and have not done anything about that so far.
ATIs drivers are very stable now. They have a beta program consisting of members of Rage3D forum that beta test drivers before public release. They release new drivers very frequently, almost every month.

Ati no saint either. The whole Quake/Quack thing is what started people looking closer at 'driver optumizations'

Never said they were but they are doing a much better job keeping their drivers clean from these "optimizations".

I have to come down on the side of ATI also. Tom's Hardware has a good article comparing just the two cards you are comparing. ATI came out the winner in the test. I believe that the Nvidia was lacking seriously in a couple area, but for the life of me i can't remember just what they were. The ATI is, I believe a little less money also- around 50-100$ difference depending on what sources you check.
Good Luck"
