Ok so there seems to be a limit on how many times a buddy can "go down" before you can't revive him any more and he/she dies. There's no way to give them back any long-term health.

Now I want the achievement "The third faction" - Rescue all the Buddies from their respective predicaments.

Can anyone explain what that means? Do they all have a special mission that comes up at a certain time or what?

I assume so, something later in the game. I have no idea though.
EDIT:It might be them ambushing/being ambushed in their buddy missions

Ok I was wondering because it's really a pain now when my buddy rescues me. I have to make sure he doesn't die or else I'm screwed.

I would be nice if they could recover/rest over time and this didn't happen.

I just completed the game having never let any of my buddies die and there was no achievement.On other forums people have suggested you have to visit 'compounds' to rescue new buddies, but the only times I had ever managed to do this was when the guy's outside the faction buildings give you the mission to do so. It's pretty lame, I was going for this achievement and there is no way I am playing through again.

You can go and rescue your extra buddies without any mission. Their locations vary, but check out what looks like a house in Fresh Fish, **** Fights, Or Lumber Yard. In the second map, try the Brewery.
