I have to go back to square one and re-install Vista. It screwed up after just two months...totally lost track of my optical DVD and CDrom drives... Ridiculous. Cannot be repaired, etc, and I've been with Computer-builder Experts. I must re-install Vista.

On teh positive side, I will have the opportunity to install a new anti-virus application, tossing Norton into the trash. Norton has caused too many problems, and is difficult if not impossible to completely de-activate/remove. This is my chance!

I've heard there are some excellent anti-virus programs...Free downloadable ones, in some cases. I can also go out to buy a new program.

What would you recommend for a top-notch anti-virus program that will not give the headaches of Norton?

    Thanks in advance.

I have used AVG Free anti virus since chucking Norton Antivirus. generally less intrusive on the system while it is not running a scheduled virus scan. See http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

There is some nagwear involved, and when getting updates you sometimes have to look to make sure you are downloading the Free version. Otherwise I love it and don't have to remember to update any silly subscriptions for updates and the like. It's on all my XP machines as well as the wife's Vista machine.

Hope that helps- its worked for me.

    NOD32, 'nuff said.
"The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.[Europe], under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep. If once [the people] become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, judges and governors shall all become wolves. " - Thomas Jefferson

I changed the AVG Free for a new one, that IMHO is far better and less intrusive:

    Kaspersky Antivirus.

    AVIRA

I used these peoples' excellent product for eight years and I've used the paid version for 3 of 'em. I practically never have any intrusions pass by undetected.

    Good price too,

Either NOD 32, or Kasperky, both are hard on viruses, yet light on your system!

AVG has always been light, easy and free. Lately, I've seen great reviews on the Kapersky software as well as Avast.

I'll look for some links to the latter two. These would be good to have posted in a handy spot in the Community Help forums.

    Avast: http://www.avast.com/

    Kapersky: http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/trial-versions.php?a...K=Kapersky&HBX_OU=50

I have been running the trial version of NOD32. It is so much more than an AV program. It is an Anti-Spyware, Anti-Malware, & detects all manner of rootkits & keyloggers. The trial version is for 30-days and is fully functional. So far I am very impressed with it.
