Also note that if you do the following and continue to experience the Java 1.4.2 error, the problem may be a defective game DVD. If that's the situation, the solution is to exchange the game as being defective.

hmm..i've tried today as a last resort to use my friend's dvd..still no luck..
and my dvd seems to work on his machine...we tried to check the services that he's got running on his win xp (SP2) and i couldn't find many differences...apart from some different services such as raid controllers and hardware specific services...
i'll see if i can get the money back for the game but i doubt it very much!

"...I've done all that is necessary to correct the problems..."

Did you do everything (except for step 8, obviously) in Myst V: Java-related Installation Problem With Win XP? All of steps 1 through 7 may be necessary, so don't pick and choose!

Java 1.5.0 u6 has been released since the help topic was created: you'll pick that up correctly on the link, not u5 as stated, which was current initially.

ok that's it, i give up...
i've now done everything!!! step by step...except removing SP2...same thing...the installation stops and tells me to look at the log for more info...the log tells me the exact same thing as stated in the thread above...i've tried clean boot install, safe mode install...to no avail..does anyone knows what the log.txt message about java is?

    Thanks everyone

See if you can send your log to Sun Java support for more info. If you get anything useful, please report back.

Your installation file is corrupted. can specially happen if you downloaded it with a download manager. Try again. https://jsecom16c.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessi...5970727EB2ED1920889#
accept the licence then make sure to download the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and not the online version.

That's not the correct URL, unless you have a Sun account.

    Here's how to download:
-- a. Go to Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0. *DO NOT* use a "download accelerator" or "download helper" utility, including the Sun Download Manager.
-- b. Click on Download JRE 5.0 Update 6 under JRE 5.0 Update 6 - includes the JVM technology.
-- c. Click on the Accept License Agreement radio button.
    -- d. Download jre-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p.exe, Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language, 16.00 MB (under Windows Platform - J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6).

    pittigarru,

I've just posted a fairly significant revision of Myst V: Java-related Installation Problem With Win XP. Take a look, check for things you haven't done, including procedure steps.

Also, if by chance you've been doing the Java online installation instead of the offline installation, try again with the offline installation. Online installs can be very flaky....
