Thread: Heat pipe cooling ? | Forums

  1. #1
I do a lot of LAN parties. So I really don't think Water cooling will be convenient for me.

I have a 2.4 P4 800Ht cpu and want to clock it up to 3+ to compensate for the latest patch. I've had to reduce vid settings due to the AI. I like them improved but I miss the large amounts of aircraft I used to be able to fly with, and more intense graphic settings.

I don't want to upgrade and build a new machine just yet. I don't beleive the next level in equipment, left at stock settings is really that much more leaps and bounds, to make it worth the expence.

So I'm asking how do these things do? Will they actually control the temp well enough to OC my rig, and allow the mobility of the LAN party stuff?

    Please advise, TY

They do well, especially the XP-90CU. It is probably the best air cooled cpu heatsink available today.

But I am sure you have seen the thread for the Kingwin Arctic Liquid Cooler. It costs about the same, seeing as you have to purchase a fan for the XP-90CU, plus seeing that you listed a pic of the Zalman ZM80-D for your video card, (which btw is imho the best VGA card cooler out there). The Kingwin includes a cpu and gpu water block and is all inclusive inside your case. Perfect for Lan parties and it cools better than air. My cpu load temps dropped 10C and my gpu load temps dropped 21C. And if you are thinking of purchasing a cpu and VGA card cooler, the Kingwin is cheaper. I think ZipZoomFly has it for around $96 and free 2nd Fed-Ex shipping. Another plus is that you get the performance without the noise, it is completely silent. The only fan I hear running is my PSU fan. And installation is a breeze. Just something to think about m8.

Do you have a link for this Kingwin?

I have seen this for the gpu from them.

Going to go do some more research. BRB

Here's a link directly to the water cooler I mentioned: http://www.kingwin.com/pdut_detail.asp?CateID=53&ID=187 What makes this unit is that it includes a water block for the gpu as well. There is a thread about halfway down the first page in this forum concerning the Kingwin Arctic Liquid Cooler. Just read it and you will get an idea from m8's here exactly how well it performs. From the looks of it, you wouldn't think much of it. But the addition of the second radiator really helps get the job done.

EDIT: I just bumped the thread about this water cooler up for you m8. Here's a review: http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/super_cooling/ki.../arcticliquidcooler/
    And another one: http://www.overclockercafe.com/Reviews/cooling/Kingwin_...c_Water_Cooling_Kit/

My FX-53's load temps went from 58C to 60C down to 48C to 50C, which is better than any air cooling would do. My gpu on my X850XT PE went from 68C to 70C down to 46C to 48C. If you read the thread about it here, you will notice some of us set the unit up differently. Myself? I put the second radiator between the flow from the cpu to the gpu so to cool the water back off before it goes to the gpu, and this is probably why my gpu's load temps are so low. Some m8's here set it up to run from the unit, to the cpu/gpu, to the cpu/gpu, to the second radiator and then to the units radiator. I am going to experiment a little and change the routing a bit to see if I can get better results. But all in all, this unit rocks, and it costs less than if you were trying to purchase a cpu air cooler and a VGA cooler (it does a better job), and it all fits nicely insde my mid-tower case.

Just had a local geek friend of mine show me this.

    http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/s...bzero4g.htm#p4

He says it works real good too! Any thoughts. other than more expensive.

From the looks of it, this is a Peltier type of cooling. It uses electricity to heat up one side of the Peltier which in turn cools the opposite side which is the side in contact with the cpu. The heatsink is in contact with the side of the Peltier that is being heated. This setup is normally used with water cooling which can be troublesome because of condenstion. Using a Peltier with a heatsink instead of water cooling stays off the condensation but the true capabilities of a Peltier in hindered tremendously. And by looking at the load temps in the diagram, you would probably be better served with an XP-90CU for a cpu cooler.

The Kingwin would be the way to go between the two imo. Not only are you cooling your cpu better, you can also cool your gpu at no extrta cost, plus it is cheaper than the Peltier.

Interesting link though m8. I had never seen these coolers before. But even if I had, I would have still went with the Kingwin for the ability to cool my card and cpu, and for the silence of getting rid of the fan noise associated with air cooled cpus and VGA cards.

Imho, and as a gamer, you would be better served with a water cooling setup like the Kingwin. You will get better cooling under load plus you can cool both the cpu and your gpu.

    S~! Toad

I just had a look at your link. While very interesting and I am sure more effective than a standard cooler. I feel confident that it wouldnt even come close to water cooling. I was a little nervous at first, as this was my first experience with wc but I can never go back now. I urge you to have a look at the Kingwin as well.

Yep that kingwin looks impressive. Time to go shopping. I like thats it all internal. I have more than enough room and bays for it. The Peltier system concerns me about my PSU size. I have a 450 and several fans already and according to a PSU calculator I am already using 400 watts as is.

I don't quite understand. You say its all internal but it keeps mentioning an external water supply????

That just means there's a little fill hole on the front drive bay panel so you can fill it without opening the case.
