Thread: Extended Download Service? | Forums

  1. #1
When looking at the Unishop order page for Cliffs of dover there's an option for "Extended Download Service: $12.00"

Does anyone know what this is?

It'ld take the price up to $101.95AUD for the downloaded version.

With the cost that their asking it would take a bit of nerve to charge more for a faster download!

    Cheers!

Who knows the cheaper version might then have this when trying to activate it?

    From the Ubishop store:
"What is the Extended Download Service (EDS)?

EDS essentially allows you to download your purchase again for up to two (2) years, in the event your computer crashes or the downloaded file becomes damaged or corrupt. It can be thought of as an insurance policy in case anything goes wrong with your computer or the downloaded product. When you have downloadable items in your order, you will see a link to add EDS to your order on the shopping cart page or the checkout page. Upon payment of the specified fee, Digital River, Inc. ("DR") agrees to provide you (the "End User") a service that enables the End User to make multiple downloads of digital computer software products (a "Product" or "Products") purchased in a single order (an "Order") and downloaded from this Web site (the "Site") for a period of two (2) years after the date the End User purchases the Product (the "Service"). Click here for full details about EDS.

To purchase EDS for download products in a completed order, you must look up your order and complete an additional purchase.

I guess I don't fully understand what this service is offering. Just above the EDS description on the help page is "How can I re-download software that I have already purchased?" EDS seems like a more wordy way of doing the same thing. I must be missing something.

My only online download purchases have been through Blizzard and Steam, both of which keep track of all games I've purchased and let me download them and activate whenever I want.

This download caper is sounding worse every time I look into it deeper.

So I buy a licence for Cliffs of Dover and the company does not supply with the product on any physical media, They allow me to down load the sim for a short period and then will charge me full price for the sim if I download it out side that period?

That is really bad! I do not like that idea.

When is the game going onto steam?

eh? wot's wrong with just burning the download to disc, like the purchaser should be able to do anyway? (need I ask? has UBI buggered this up too?)

*edit: It looks like they may have...

    What is a BackUp CD?
A BackUp CD is an additional service we offer for downloaded products. BackUp CD allows you to purchase a physical version of your downloaded software and is purchased from within the shopping cart. You can only purchase a BackUp CD for a download product you purchase. BackUp CD can not be purchased as a stand-alone product.
If you want to purchase a BackUp CD for the downloaded products in a completed order, you must look up your order and complete an additional purchase.

Hopefully the ED doesn't mean one download only and that's it, unless more money is forked out to guarantee storage and listing

You can download one set of files that will allow you to reinstall and -then- there's the 5 activations? LOL, use up those 5 in less than 2 years and your 'extended service' is just what good?
This is beginning to look like a shell game. The bean counters have found something people want and they're playing games where the money goes in and maybe you keep what you get and maybe you pay again to play again.

IF your get one set of download files AND IF you want to ensure you have a good copy THEN there is a way to do that on your own. First you make a RAR file set of the full download using WinRAR. Then you make a PAR file set (error check and correct data set) using QuickPAR of perhaps 20% which is big. Then you burn all those files with a copy of WinRAR and QuickPAR to multiple backup DVD's (don't keep them all in one building), fill the DVD with multiple folders of the same full set and for good measure upload the set to a private file space.

When you reassemble the files, first you run QuickPAR that checks for error and can recover corrupt bits as large as the PAR set. Then you run WinRAR to assemble your checked and corrected download. Unless the entire DVD is scratched, etc, the chances are with many copies of those files on the disc you can get enough to build a good set.

The RAR and PAR method has been used for over 10 years now (QuickPAR has been improved in that time and can do the whole job but I stick with what I know works) for downloads off Usenet servers where not all the files may be on the server by the time you get there in addition to bits corrupted in transmission and yet people regularly pull down 100M to 9G file sets with little if any problem. It's a great way to keep backups that every IT person should know.

I'm not seeing anything about this on the US Ubi store.
