Can anyone help? Every time I come close to defeating the enemy town to the West of the Castle, the game crashes back to my desktop; you can imagine my howls of frustration as this happens, after taking so long to get to the position to be able to do this....

The simple answer is don't attack the enemies in the West, the game expects you to just hold them off long enough to pay the tribute to the allied village where Helias and Ari are, and to build a weather machine to bring on summer and melt the ice.
The enemy the game script expects you to defeat to win the level, is in the North East, just attack them when you've melted the ice and blocked off the Western enemies.
