As Suhren was visiting his old friend Hufnagel in Stettin he came across some polish pows which worked in agriculture.
Suhren heard that a classical music band had been formed out of them and that they were usally playing beethoven or tchaikovsky in restaurants.
Hufnagel came up with the idea to ask them if they would like to play the polish national anthem for them.
First they dont liked the idea to play it in that situation at all. It was forbidden to play it afterall and they could get into a lot of trouble if they would do so.
But Suhren begged them to play it even if they do it just very quietly.
He always liked the melody and its text "Poland is not lost yet!"
Suhren described that the band members had tears in their eyes while they were playing it and it was the same with him and Hufnagel.
And of course one of the "150 % national socialists" like Suhren used to call them, heard it and got in rage.
Suhren said that "he as an officer ordered them to do it" and that he takes full responsibility.
Of course, the 150 % nazi wrote a letter about this "untolerable happening" to Suhrenâ´s flotilla commander and he got into a lot of trouble for that.
By the way : Later it was Erich Topp and his influence who managed to pull Suhren out of the fire. But thats another story

I always liked Suhren...and now another reason, thanks for the story...must be in his book I haven't read yet.

BTW - Are you living in Berlin area ?
I have just started reading his memoirs "Ace of Aces" it seems like a good read so far. It will be interesting to see if he relates to his moments with the Polish musicians and the resulting trouble he got in.
