Thread: A few newbie questions | Forums

    Hi,

I recently bought Silent Hunter III and have enjoyed reading through this forum. I have a few questions that someone can hopefully answer.

At the moment I'm nearing the start of 1941 in career mode with a realism setting of 47%. I wondered if attacking convoys will start to get more difficult as time goes on? So far I've not had any major problems with engaging a convoy, evading the escorts and re-engaging the convoy once my torpedoes have reloaded.

I was also wondering if there was any point in sending a patrol report? So far I've either received 'keep up the good work' or 'return to base' if I've used up all my torpedoes. Do you ever get any different messages/orders?

So far I've come across merchant shipping, destroyers, trawlers, etc. Do you ever come across large warships like aircraft carriers and battleships?

My last question is do you ever get different missions in career mode? So far all I've been asked to do is patrol a certain square for 24 hours.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mike

Hi Mike, I'll try to answer.
You are still a bit early in the career, and as allied equipment improves, it will get harder.
I don't think there is any need to send status reports, I believe (I may be wrong) that, later in the war,the allies can actually find you easier if you are sending many messages.
Warships are there, but rare. I have more luck finding them in ports.
In the vanilla game, you only get patrol missions, but after(or before) you spend the 24hrs., you are free to go where you please.
I hope that helps a bit, post if you have more questions. Most people here are very nice.

    Hi mracosky,

Thanks for the reply. Funnily enough I came across a heavily guarded convoy today so it looks like I spoke too soon!

Here's another newbie (noobie) question. I've been playing SH4 for quite a while and really enjoy it. What are the essential differences between SH3 and SH4?

    Thank you!

Silent Hunter 4 is centered around attacking Japan and stopping their territorial advances, while Silent Hunter 3 is in the Atlantic and you play as a U-boat commander trying to cut off Britons supply lines.

Different ships, different tactics and different levels of fun.

    Enjoy your game.
