Thread: Video Distortion and System Crashes | Forums

  1. #1
Probably a stupid question.....In single player mode after a while I experience display distortion and if I try to continue the computer crashes and reboots. Have system with recommended grunt and compatible Video Card. Have tried re-installing the software. Will a patch fix the problem ?

Sounds like a heat issue...can you confirm all your tempatures are within norm while in game?

does it happen in the same spot every time? if so it may be that sound bug. what are your sound settings? put it to hardware if it is on software.
video distortion sounds like your vid card is getting hot and artifacting then crashing. you have anything overclocked?

    I go with the heat.
After it reboots, touch your CPU and GPU heatsinks if either burns you, it is too hot.
You might try running witht he case open while you oreder a new fan. Fans start at about â£5 so it is cheap to fix usually.

The graphics don't appear to distort in the same place and I have a new computer with a 256Mb Nvidia GeForce 6600 card. I would be surprised not to mention disappointed if it was overheating ! Might try downloading the latest driver for it ??

lol would that really work? i've done both before and the heatsinks always remained cool to the touch, though temprature readings fluctuated

I had the very same problem, and it was heat related. The fan on my Nvidia 6600GT was lockedup
so I replaced it with a Zalman GPU Fan kit $40
Fit perrfect, GRAW game runs perfect now too.

Yeah it does work..When my cpu was overheating it got PROPPER hot to the touch..But taking the side off will only help if the room temp.is lower then the normal inside case temp. which at this time of the year it probably is..you could try a desk fan blowing into your opc with the side off while you wait for a new fan.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I also have a 6600 but I run about 4 or 5 fans on my case, I have a P4 2.8ghz with 2 MB of RAM, I run very low FPS but at 1024 x 768 I have a few probs with heat.

Sure, in the heat of battle it will slow down tremendously but hey, I am not about to invest money on my rig just because this particular game demands more than others.

Taking the cover off your PC will not make it run cooler... the chances are it will run hotter.

With the case closed the idea is to draw in air from one end of the case and for the air to travel towards the exhaust fan thus taking the warmer air (radiated off the components) with it.

With the case off, this will not happen.

Air is NOT cooled by a fan, when you feel air blown at you it only feels cooler, it is not actually cooler. Therefore the idea of a fan inside your PC is not to blow air at the components, it is designed to create a flow of air to take the warmer air out.
