Has anyone actually just before leaving docks on a mission, manned the mahine gun and let loose on the band, nurses and dockhands?

Maybe even a HE or two ?

Yes. It does nothing. Seems to pass through the people. I've had deck gun shells detonate on the buildings, but there's still no damage.

And think twice about shooting FLAK at the nurses...there are so many better things to do with them

It's the same thing in allied ports!
As shown on the two images from Halifax, I tricked an allied corvette to sail into the docks, then I surfaced at the other side to hit the docked fishing boat with my AA guns. Meanwhile the corvette was shooting at me, but right into the buildings! No damage there either! In SH2, I did some shooting in harbours just for the fun of it, and some buildings blow up then...

Its the same if an air raid take place in port, the band continues to merrily play 'deuchland uber alles' and crowd joyfully applaud and cheer as bombs reign down from the skies, you think they would run away screaming - A la das boot.
