Thread: Impact vs Magnetic? | Forums

Ive never used magnetic torps intentionally. I mean a few times i happend to get it on escorts because it ran a bit too deep for me. I know they do more damage, but im in 1940. How often to the magnetics dud compared to impact? I know they do more damage but im worried ill be wasting more torps trying to get them to explode under the keel

I haven't had many duds. I use mags but only when pretty calm. I've had them detonate prematurely when fired in rough seas. They do work great when set to run 1-2 m under the keel.

I use impact mostly, they are far more reliable for me. In rough seas the magnetics prematurely detonate WAY too often for me to put up with. Impacts never have that problem for me. So I just stick with impacts for the most part. Magnetic ones can do more damage but the increase in damage isn't worth the lack of reliability or consistancy IMHO. Magnetics also don't work at all in shallow water like that of Scapa Flow. If you set them under the keel then they are far more likely to hit the sea floor than the enemy ship.

For most ships I use impact pistol, but sometimes the magnetic comes in very handy...like if I only have one torp left and I just found a C3 Cargo.

I thought that the magnetic pistol was developed to defeat the belt of armour around cruisers and battleships. I wonder if this is modelled in the game. I haven't found any serious warships yet.

I use magnetic in all circumstances except shooting shallow in rough seas. I've had them explode prematurely in the calmest of seas, and I've used them regularly to sink C2 and C3 cargo vessels in crummy weather and high seas. The draft of the big boats means there's little danger of it broaching, and you're setting it a good metre or two below that to get a good shot. Impact torps are just as prone to duds, if you hit at a slight angle or hit so low as to catch the curve of the keel then your torpedo just glances off anyway. Magnetic is the way ahead, does more damage and can be fired from any angle successfully.

I use magnetic all the time. The extra damage is handy and they are much less likely be be duds in my experience. Many times I get duds if I hit the ship from an angle as oppossed to a perpendicular hit. With magnetic under keel it does not matter that you are not hitting from close to 90 degrees port/starboard of the target.

Magnetic is the only way to go if you are shooting at an destroyer that is rapidly bearing down on your boat. Impact will bounce off the bow.

I only use magnetic. In 8 patrols, I've had about 4 of them explode prematurely. Most of the time I can count on them doing the job.

The times that they don't work, they usually bounce off the hull, or explode well after passing beneath- but it's usually quite reliable.

They aren't JUST magnetic either- they are magnetic+impact, so they work either way when set to "M" on the pistol.

I found out that, well by me, the impact modus is better when you have a 90â? angle towards your target, then they basicly always hit. But as soon the angle drops, you will most like always more and more get failurs. So in those angle positions the magnetic mode has turned out to be way more reliable.

One thing to think about is that impact torpedos probably aren't gonna take out something like a C2 with one shot. Not saying you can't do it- but it is much less likely than an under-keel shot.

So, even if you hit one with a solid impact shot, you're probably gonna have to shoot another one anyway. With magnetic, you will most likely kill a C2 with one shot if you are in position.

BTW, I used to have pretty good success with one torpedo shots dead center on a C2. Now, I've been aiming beneath the main superstructure, and have been cracking them in half with one shot. It used to be that I would hit them dead center under the keel and they would just sink- but cracking them in half is better.

Yeah i like the breaking in half part, but it only happend once to me using impact torpedos, pretty common with the deck gun though
