Thread: Object Shadowing | Forums

Anyone know how to get terrain to properly shade objects (rocks in the shadow of a cliff, for example). Vegetation seems to be using the lighting info, but objects that I place seem to be fully bright. Thanks

You need to Generate Lightmaps for those objects. Click on the Game menu and select Generate Lightmaps.

Make sure the Use Sunlight option is checked and click the All button. This will generate lightmaps for all objects in the level.

Also dont forget to Generate the Surface texture from the File menu. Shadows wont show up on terrain until you do this.

Thanks, I thought I had done just that, but I'll have to try again and see why it doesn't seem to be working.

OK, I tried exactly that, but I have a dark blue shadow falling across my terrain, and the rocks that sit in it are fully lit. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? It must be something stupid. Thanks

OK, I hate to reply to myself, but is this just not possible? The shadows clearly show up on the vegetation, but not the objects. Can terrain not cast shadows on entities, only vegetation?

OK, I do have the receive shadows/lightmaps boxes checked (doesn't seem to do anything), but I didn't see any receive sunlight checkbox. Is this available for brushes? I appreciate the help.

You using DP3 by chance? Or precise? It has happened to me a few times that I get no lightmaps on TERRAIN but fine on other objects when using DP3. I change it to precise, generate lightmaps they show up. Then I go back to DP3 regenerate and they reappear fine. May be a bug I dunno but thats how I get them back when I loose them on DP3.
