Thread: Does From Dust use the always-on DRM? | Forums

  1. #1
Could we have an official answer that's easy to find please? As of now, Steam has it listed as:

    Title: From Dust
    Genre: Simulation, Adventure
    Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier
    Publisher: Ubisoft
    Release Date: Aug 17, 2011
Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish
    3rd-party DRM: Ubisoft Online Service

I will never ever touch a game with always-on DRM.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Ubisoft confirmed that the game will not require a permanent online connection. It does have DRM but it's probably a one time activation.

    Indeed.

Remember though, if any game does not have 'always on' requirement, you do lose the handy online save system - if you play at different locations, you will have to manually take the game saves with you.

I also lose the "handy" ability to play my game at all if there's a problem with connecting to the internet. Your trying to spin this garbage into gold sickens me.

Perhaps you didnt read the above posts but From Dust will NOT require always on connection so no you will not lose the ability to play your game once installed and registered

Why can't they just use steam's built in DRM? We're using steam anyways, it has all the bells and whistles you'd need (online saving, achievements, ect...). I don't get why we need more DRM on top of DRM. It seems ubi really likes to make things difficult for their customers...

Believe it or not, a lot of game company's do not like steam, as they have to give up an awful lot of their games rights to steam, when they let them publish their games on it. I was surprised by this as I thought they actually liked steam, but here they don't. You will actually find a lot of games do not appear on steam, while you will find them on other digital distribution sites, this is why, the company's behind those game, just don't like steam.

Personally myself I have had to much hassle from steam, I try to avoid them whenever I can, so do a lot of other people.

DRM is always on, you cannot play this without the internet.

Hey Ubisoft this doesn't detour people from Pirating , this just detours legitimate players buying and playing. I've bought three copies of this F-ing game and I can't play them offline. (one for myself and one for each of my kids via steam) I will be hacking it first chance because wasting my bandwidth and freezing games (like settlers 7 as well) suck. Pirates don't have these problems because they don't have to play online maybe I should have pirated these games instead. (Even steam has an offline mode.)

I'm going to tell as many people as I possibly can not to buy "from dust", "settlers 7", "assassins creed", and every other game you sell at Gamestop, on amazon, on IGN, and everywhere else your game sells. (Not that your reviews of settlers 7 on amazon are that good already, I wish i would have read those first.)
You know it wouldn't suck so much if it didn't happen sooo often.

Thanks for some great games, too bad they come with such crappy service.
