Guten Tag;
I have run out of fuel about 150km from Wilhelmshaven and have also run my batteries flat. When I press the escape button I am given 2 choices; continue patrol or abandon career. I would prefer to retain this career if possible. I am playing SHIII with the 1.4b patch only. I am at 100% realism and wish to complete a career from Sept'39 to as far as possible. If I die I start over, if I have to abandon a career I will.

I had a similar problem a long time ago. What I did was just sit on the surface in time compression and the batteries recharged themselves. Then I dove and ran submerged until the batteries were flat and did it over again until I got back. This was a game bug that I was able to exploit. Since I run modded games I think this has been eliminated; but not relevant since I make sure not to run out of fuel.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks for your suggestion, I will try it. I know it will be cheating a bit but, being so close to home you would think I could hail a trawler or radio for help. I am so close to the coast of Germany, maybe even in German waters. I have sent several meaage in hopes the HQ would send help. They just exhort me to "keep up the good work".

Radioing for help is sadly not an option. The developers thought of it (see buttons shown in the manual) but "request escort to base" and "ask for fresh orders" were not implemented in the game (time pressures on the developers to make the release date set by UBI).
BdU has only ever two standard responses to your status reports (which does not contain fuel state). If you've sunk anything, it's "keep up the good work"; if not, it's "be more aggressive". There is also a "thank you" message for convoy contact reports, and that's it. Some supermods and SH3Commander have additional radio traffic, but none that would let you address the fuel problem.
By the way, 150 km from Wilhelmshaven you are almost certainly not in German waters; more likely in Danish, or Dutch waters or the open sea; however, depeding on the time in the war these may be German-controlled.
In the real events, three miles northwest of Helgoland was the outer limit of what the Germans regarded as truly "home" waters in the early war; civillian vessels were not allowed to leave these except by government order or permission.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Maybe try firing off all your remaining eels to get rid of the "keep up the good work" message and initiate a "return to base?" Not sure if that will work, since "abandon carer" seems to be my only choice as well; but it is worth a try.

the "Abandon career" option is only active when playing at 100% realism if your are not playing at this level then you should be able exit the patrol no matter where you are.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks matey's but alas I am finished. Here is what happened. I "Abandoned" my career, wound up in Wilhelmshaven awarded the IC2. Went out on the next voyage (3rd voyage) and then saved and exited it after sailing 500 or so km. I next exited the game. That was yesterday. Today I opened SHIII, went to careers, selected my boat and found I was listed as dead. I had indeed Abandoned my career in disgrace! Just prior to abandoning though, I did try two things. 1) I fired off all my Tin Fish, radioed BdU and was told to return to base.2) I time compressed and ran forward 48 hours in hopes that my batteries might charge up, or help in some way would arrive but no such luck. I am ~5km north of the island Juist and near it's east end. I laid a course for the Wilelmshaven dock and found I am 160km from home. Somewhere very close, if not just inside Deutschlands waters........Anyhow I have been demoted or should be and will likely find myself in Russia in 2 years time. Thanks all!.....................der Kanucker.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I am using 100% realism. I miss alot of the time with my torpedoes. I also have trouble spelling as you will no doubt see.
