Disable sound=much better FPS | Forums

Have tried some tweaks to boost my fps, but the only thing that seem to give me the best result, is when i disable sound. Why is that?
Is it because my on board AC97 audio suck that much, and i will get better fps if i bought a sound card, or is because the sound engine stop stealing cpu-cycles from other parts of the game.
I don't want spend money on a soundcard, if it not will make any difference.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Yes I'm afraid your AC97 audio sucks (well it would if it could muster the strength .

You are right that is is hogging the CPU, this is why it is recommended to lower the hardware acceleration to standard.

An Audigy 1 gamer would do a better job as it off loads the CPU work.

Hi B16Enk, thank you.
I just got the great idea to steal, well..borrow, my brothers soundcard from his old computer that was standing around here, it is a "Sound Blaster PCI 128", and as a matter of fact, the five years old card did give me a few fps in return, but it was not much and i still get alot better perfomance when i disable all sounds. I find it strange that the sound engine eats so many frames.
I'll post my DxDiag-file, maybe there is something else i can tweak?

It's not strange at all if you think about it. All that sound is, when you break it down, nothing but 0s and 1s, just like everything else. It takes CPU cycles to process the bits from the game and return the signal to the card where it outputs to the speakers. Some audio cards have a better processor built in that relieves the CPU of most of this task.

The onboard sound chip's job is mainly to convert the signal to analog and output it to the speakers while leaving the processing tasks to the main CPU--taking up 10-20% of the resources. A good sound card will do most of it itself and only use around 5% of the CPU.

Some ways to lower this overhead is to reduce the quality of sound (number of bits to process) sent to the CPU. This is done via the hardware acceleration. It also helps to reduce the sampling rate to 22Hz, fastest, and the number of channels to 8 or 16 in the game sound setup.

I may not be entirely accurate on all that, but I think that's the general idea.

You need a REAL sound card. A soundblaster PCI 128 isnâ´t much better than onboard audio if any. You will probably find the onboard sound delivering better sound.

Audio make half of the game experience really.

That's true, it is probably not so strange after all. But i have really never before seen so big impact on fps in any game, by just disable or enable sound effects. I was surprised to see a almost 50% increase when i disabled all sounds, but maybe it's because this game uses many sounds at once.
But i will buy a better sound card soon, thank you guys, for all help.
