Thread: Map editor... dissapointed | Forums

Anyone else think that it sucks in the editor that you only can create multiplayer maps, and not single player maps? I mean how hard could it be to put in boots or something. I don't have many friends who likes to play FarCry intincts and i don't have live... So this is one thing that i'm really dissapointed of in FarCry instincts.. what do you think?

Your post doesn't make sense. What do you mean single player maps? Like maps that you play in story mode? Do you know how hard it would be to make a level in the single player? That's something a map developer does. You'd need options for opening gates, alarm soundings...it would be so much more complicated than multiplayer maps. There are other solutions to your problem as well. For one, you could get a job and buy XBOX LIVE. You could also get a social life, then you could play with your friends on splitscreen. My point is, there's no point in complaining about such a big thing that's never going to happen. Be happy you got Far Cry in the first place.

    DaggeH,

A map editor is something unusual on consoles. One of the reason is that you don't have a mouse and a keyboard. The gamepad is realy realy great to play games but it's kind of limited when comes the time to make something more complicated, like moving a cursor on screen.

A mutltiplayer map editor is much simpler because you only have to make the map and it's then populated by real player. It's not a mission editor. Sure you could probably do something like, make a map and then add 10 bots to it, and play it single player. But it would be much more work for a developer to do that. Can you imagine the problem for bots AI with randomly generated user defined map? They would probably get stuck everywhere and do stupid things. And since it's not a missions editor, what kind of experience would you have as single player? Kill all the bots and that's it? Not much of a challenge dont you think?

so that's probably some of the reasons behind the multiplayer only map editor tool.

other reasons can and probably include:

    1. an entire single player does not fit in all at once. How do you edit that on a console? They only load part of the single player levels at a time. This is a typical game engine technique. PC has 1 gig or more of ram, XBOX has 64 megs of ram. Slight difference.

    2. AI is too complex to expose through a console based map editor. Team AI, formations, inter-relations, triggers, objectives. How to make an "easy to use" editor if all that stuff is all hardcore AI systems?

    3. Pathfinding. Like it was said ealier, AI need to know how to move around in these levels. This is an incredibly non-trival task. If you can find a fool proof system for AI pathfinding in levels that can be in any shape, a lot of programmers will want to talk to you.

    4. Design Decision: In the Dev Q&A, the guy said he only wanted to make a multiplayer map editor and make it the best around. Maybe he wanted to start small, do it the best way possible and then probably make it evolve to something better.

    5. Scope. Have one guy (look in the credits) create a multiplayer and singleplayer level editor, from scratch, on a console, that does them better and easier to use than what the game designers use themselves? That's some pretty good crack.

I'm sure there are more, but I'm sure you get it by now.

Quaagmire, if your just after to post spamming messages you could get a diary and write down about your life there. And everyone is not made of money, i'm 14 years old and it's not that easy to find a job in this city at that age. And I have a perfect working social life, thanks. Probably better than yours, i mean people must think that you're a real pain in the *** if you come up with that kind of replys all the time.

I would imagine this is the problem with a person declaring themselves to be an Ubisoft employee on a forum. It might be true, it might be false. And if it's true then suddenly you represent the whole company and irate posters will want answers for everything.
