Thread: New computer, best way to transfer files? | Forums

  1. #1
Giving my old computer to my parents gave me a good excuse to upgrade and also get a Raedeon 9800 Pro graphics card.

Since I have so many add-on files and programs to go with IL2FB, I would like to transfer them to my new computer. What is the best way to do this? I've seen a software program that sells for about $40 that will transfer files between computers but I'd rather not spend money if there is another way to do it. Thanks in advance

Build the new rig, install windows on new HD. Put in old HD as slave, transfer all your files.

Or you could just burn some discs.

If you have money left over, you may wanna think of investing in a big data-dump hdd that'll stay with you for a few years. This is a reasonable investment imo, with prices for 200-250GB HDDs falling. Get SATA if you have SATA ports on your mobo, the wiring is not as messy as regular PATA IDE.

Yeah, its a good idea to have a drive like that. I have my music, photos, videos, and general backup stuff on an extra 160 GIG that i hope i can just keep forever. Really, the best for that would be an external drive, and they're pretty cheap now too. For that matter, you can just buy a kit for 20 bucks, and make the existing drive an external. Then you need to transfer nothing. Just stick a cheap drive into the old system.

If the two computers are going to be networked you could simply transfer them across the network using windows file sharing. For security sake, turn off file sharing once you've done the transfer.

Guys, is it wise to use the old HD as slave. If you have corrupted files, can't they be transfered over? Only on the assumption you don't know which ones are corrupted, that is. I do know all my FB files and most of the others are ok tho. Ones I know were no good are gone.

The reason being is my Windows XP system is totally screwed up. This pc shouldn't know the difference on which HD is which, I'd think. I was thinking of putting in a new HD and using the Recovery cds to install XP on the new HD. Then setting up the old one as a slave to get my files transferred over. Then..... put all my components in a new tower with bigger PSU for the time being until I can get the rest of what I need. My new Xaser III v1000D and 480watt PSU will be here this week. The rest will have to wait for awhile.... just had new driveway put in and that was first on the list. The Warden said so.

Then when all is well and safe again in the zoltoies department, continue with "The Build".
