(New poster here, really enjoying the game so far, only had a few crashes that occured when trying to load an old career save without deleting the others before it.)

    Anyways...

So I was on my forth patrol, I always swing past Dover on the French side of the Channel en route to my patrol area. I'm usually expecting to see a few warships and this time is no exception. I get the call and start checking the horizon for the contact. There's a boat but its small. I decide to engage. Turns out it's a PT boat who had enough machismo to try and take me on. I decide to stay on surface and let my new deck gunners have some fun. Oddly enough, the PT boat never launches torpedos at me, and after some circling, I make short work of him.

I got back to my route and manage to sink another ship, this time one of those small destroyers.

Back to patrol and another contact comes up. It's another one of those VK destroyers so I move to engage. I fire a torp and moments later it hits. Thinking it didn't do anything, I begin to maneuveur for a second run. About this time I notice another destroyer coming in bound.

Then I notice the destroyer I attacked is taking on heavy water at the aft, great another bites the dust.

Then I notice, right behind him, yet another destroyer coming to intercept me.

He's a ways off so I try to take on the second one before he gets to me.

Several torpedoes later, I still haven't even hit the guy and the third destroyer is barrelling down on me.

I try to get a few shots off here and there but my torps always seem to narrowly miss them. By now, they're playing games with me and I'm trying to bide my time sitting comfortably on the channel floor.

I get bored and try to see if I can break away while they're a bit away from me. I go into full power and they pretty much immediately spot me.

I ended up getting depth charged from right above me, both engines were out, taking on heavy water, crew in the engine compartments are drowning, and I'm stuck on the Channel floor.

I blow ballast and hope that I can get some people on deck fast enough to get a few shots with the deck gun in before they totally destroy me.

No such luck, upon surfacing their guns make short work of me.

Moral of the story, I need to learn better tactics for running from destroyers.

Is there a post somewhere on tactics for escaping destroyers? One is fairly easy, but two is impossible it seems.

I usually just go deep and slow, keep turning away to present a low signature. It is tedious work, and must have been hell for the men who served in submarines.

I should try out a more agressive defense if there are only one or two destroyers, but reading your post it seems like that might not be such a good idea.
