Thread: Jehon's realMyst fix | Forums

  1. #1
Hi all, I've been a myst fan since age five so you can probably imagine my dissapointment that realMyst will not work on vista on its own. i heard that Jehon had come up with a way to patch the game so it will run on vista but my searches have come up with nothing. Any links I find don't work. I was wondering if someone could be so kind as to post the insturctions on how to patch my game or at least show me where I can find them.
i suppose I should also mention that I have the international version off the game so the patch provided by ubi won't work for me.

    Welcome to the Forums!

    In general,
-- a. Start realMyst using the Desktop icon, NOT the menu item on the disc.
-- b. Start realMyst from a fresh boot.
----- 1. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications.
----- 2. Disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs running in the background.
----- 3. Do NOT run any other programs before starting realMyst.
-- c. Do NOT boot up with the realMyst disc in the drive, or with a disc in any drive.
-- d. If the realMyst disc autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.

    Suggestions:

    1. Go to Myst games in Vista (incl 64-bit), For those with a spare PC and who have found the standard fixes have f and realMyst on Vista is possible!, Playing realMYst on Vista. Be certain to read through all of the posts in those topics.

    2. Did you try to apply the realMyst version 1.1.1 patch, available here or here, using Start > Run? If not, try that.

    3. Run realMyst as an Administrator.
-- a. Click on Start, then type realMYST Interactive 3D Edition in the Start Search box.
-- b. In the Programs list, right-click on the realMyst listing, and click on Run as administrator.
-- c. If you're asked for a password or for confirmation, type in the password or click on Continue.
-- d. Close back to the Desktop and play realMyst.

    4. With "run as administrator" enabled for realMyst, disable the Desktop Window Manager (Aero Glass) when you play realMyst.
-- a. Click on Start, then type realMYST Interactive 3D Edition in the Start Search box.
-- b. In the Programs list, right-click on the realMyst listing, and click on Properties.
-- c. On the Compatibility tab, click on the Disable desktop composition check box to select it.
-- d. Close back to the Desktop and play realMyst.

This disables Aero Glass only when you play realMyst, and Aero Glass is re-enabled when you close realMyst.

    5. With "run as administrator" enabled for realMyst and the Desktop Window Manager disabled as above, run realMyst in Compatibility Mode.
-- a. Click on Start, then type realMYST Interactive 3D Edition in the Start Search box.
-- b. In the Programs list, right-click on the realMyst listing, and click on Properties.
-- c. On the Compatibility tab, click on the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box to select it.
-- d. Select an operating system, and click on OK.
-- e. Close back to the Desktop and play realMyst.

You may need to try all of the listed operating systems to find a setting that helps. Compatibility Mode stays active for realMyst until you unselect the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box.

    6. Re-install realMyst from a clean boot.
-- a. Uninstall realMyst using the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility.
----- 1. See Uninstall or change a program for details.
----- 2. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see Turn Windows features on or off.
-- b. Do step 1 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
    -- c. Re-install realMyst
-- d. Do step 7 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.

You said that realMyst "will not work on vista on its own", but unfortunately you didn't detail how it doesn't work. So, the above are only common Vista fixes that sometimes work.

For a bit of background on the realMyst bug problem, see Why won't realMyst start?!?!?! and realMyst Problems.

You have probably tried the most-mentioned realmystfix.html site, and found that the page/server is unavailable. However, there are various other sites with a realMyst Vista fix, often a modified executable to replace the original. But I won't tell you what they are.

Do Google searches (in order of preference) for:
    -- realmyst fix
    -- realmystfix
    -- realmystfix.html
    -- s-o.homepage.t-online.de

Be persistent - you'll visit multiple websites, but you'll find what you need!

BTW, did you read Merging of realMyst/Myst, Riven, and Exile Forums? As a result of that merging, if you search the merged Myst/realMyst/Riven/Exile Forums, you'll sometimes get errors on embedded links. To fix the errors for technical help links, change the old "745105941" in the URL to the new "487102941".

Well, it's just the same problem everyone has. The game immediately CTD's when i try to launch the game. I've seen some of those other fixes, but since I have the UK version of the game, the 1.1.1 pacth will not install and I'm not sure if any of those methods will work without the patch.

I actually found a weird way to start the game, but it has it's flaws. First, edit the shortcut to disable desktop composition. Then, the game should run, at least it did for me. If it doesn't, change the compatibility until it does. Warning!!! It takes about 10-15 or even 20 tries before the game will run, but it eventually will.
