Thread: New Patch | Forums

I hope the new patch will incorporate something like Quake 3 and similar games when it comes to joining a server that is hosting a map you do not have. I remember Quake 3 would download the map or give you a message depending on your settings.. FarCry gives you a critical exception and boots you to windows..

if you look at hl , quake3 you will notice that as soon that a server starts a map that many players don't have you will have lag becaus of the downloads. so forget it. the mp is allready laggy enough.

In the old days, I used to run a Quake II server. Back then I actually had to advertise my web page to tell folks were to get the custom maps. That worked for the really hardcore fans, but was way from ideal.

The way HL and Q3A handle things is better but not much.

Modern FPS games should not only let the admin define a map rotation, but also let him define a list of FTP/HTTP mirror sites for *every* map. So that folks who are missing maps can download them at *full* speed from dedicated mirror sites. It would also be nice to be able to download *all* custom maps in the current map rotation. I really really hope someone will start coding this. Having to use the game server as file mirror is a very bad idea, and makes the games *lag*!

AE-on, I like your avatar. It's like your always pondering ways to make FarCry a better game, and from the support you have brought to the community, this seems to be true.

    Bill Johnson,
hehe... been using that icon over at quake3world mapping forums as well... same reaction there... about the pondering

It's not that my idea is new, it's something that occurred to me when Quake II came out. And IIRC some games (was it UT2003?) actually implemented something like this. But alas it never seems to have caught on. This used to annoy me all the more, when at the university I had a 10 MBit connection to the internet, but had to download with a measly 3 KB/s.

I figured games already used a method like that but I don't host so didn't know. So it downloads from the same server that's hosting? that's pretty dumb

    thedudemanguy,
well actually its the simplest way to use the server "connect" channel to upload the level data to a player, directly to his hard disk. I.e. same file and path, get locally replicated. Alas this is dead slow.

My guess is, if the Crytek folks get around to adding that functionality, it will be implemented as described... I hope I am wrong though, and that they go all the way. And add automatic unzipping and installation of FTP downloaded map files.

The unzipping is important, because another drawback to the normal automatic download, is that they send the files as they are, i.e. un-packed.
