intended to help revitalize and rebuild stagnant decrepit neighborhoods...however - giving developers the say as to which neighborhoods need 'revitalizing' is plain brainless. I dont think this will hold up for long at all.

The trick is that NOBODY should have that ability. The simple fact is that if position where this power can be abused from, people will abuse it. Unless you can find a group of people who aren't interested in self service to run the government that is...

To buy in Spain is not only high risk because of the house price bubble there (which is more extreme than the UK one) but also because of the 'Land Grab Law' (officially known as LRAU) which allows property developers to 'grab' land off property owners and to build on it. One family in Andalucia earlier this year had land taken from them by property developers with the consent of the local town hall. The property developers then billed the family for Óšâ£500,000 for the public toilets, road, street lights, etc that they built on what had been the garden of the family's house. They had to pay up as this was all above board and legal due to LRAU. They not only lost their land but were financially ruined. Other familes have had their property knocked down and been offered compensation which is only a small fraction of the property's market value. It is specifically written in the United States Constitution that property may only be seized or occupied by the US Government or US Military during wartime. As President Bush states we are not at "war," or whatever he calls it, homes cannot be taken for government use.

I think this is about to start a whole new string of Supreme court decisions just so Bush can have as much power as he wants.
We should have known from day 1: it's a dictatorship over here. He's slowly getting rid of every opponent he has.

What surprised me most was the "who" that voted for the majority opinion. These were not the people I would've figured most sensitive to business interests. Historically these were the people who appeard to protect individual's rights. No doubt the law of imminent domain ground-up many property owners over the years, but at least there was supposed to be a "public's greater good" to be clearly served. This latest opinion (see also: law of the land) gives unobstructed license to every well to-do and politicaly connected builder and developer who covets the property of private citizens. Seems all they have to do is include wording like "creates jobs" and "promotes economic progress in the area" in their proposal and it's a done deal. Sad turn of events, I must say.

And by the way this has nothing to do with Bush. This something that has been going on for years now, even when I was a teen. Come to think of it Cattlemen of the west were doing it in the 1800's. This type of thing has very deep roots in our past in the US.
