Thread: Solution to memory and dx errors (maybe) | Forums

  1. #1
After patch 1.02 I was getting the memory access error from mm.exe and the dx 8 and 9 error crashes. I have the dvd version of the game. I also have steam (from HL2) and when I would download and install a patch from Ubi steam would also update. I got to thinking that maybe this is causing some sort of conflict so I rebooted my comp and shut down Steam and tried again. Prior to this patch I was never able to get past the loading screen to chapter 4, but I am now on chapter six with no problems (as long as I don't try to load one of my saved games, auto saves are safe to load so far). Just a thought that might help some. Let me know if it works for you.

    Cheers.

I've been having mm.exe problems, memory errors, and vertixbuffer locking errors too (and just when I thought the patch had fixed my game.... )

What I did to fix it so I could play was the same as I did with Half-life 2, episode one, when that gave me similar problems. I add the "-dxlevel 90" flag to my Dark Messiah shortcut, and delete vidcfg.bin in the bin directory of the game directory. You have to re-apply your video settings each time you play this way; however, for me at least, it makes the game stable. I can finally load games, chapters, levels, etc. Every few hours or so on loads it will crash (buffer error usually) but I just delete vidcfg.bin again, and am back in the game. I've managed to get to chapter 7 this way, and play on max settings.

    I hope this helps somebody!

Glad I could help someone. Maybe someone from Arcane could look into this as it might be the root of all the evil here on the boards

I can confirm that this method also works for me! Although I don't have to delete the vidcfg.bin (can't even find it), but I do have to reset the video options. I also have loading problems (stuck at xx%). But now I play at high settings, v-sync, HDR... It's great to experience the game like it is intended to.

I hope that this possible fix is noted by Arkane and other Source developers. Other games do also suffer from this issue and the (in my opinion) related stutterbug.

thanks for the best fix to date,
    Sir N.
