I just started to play manual targeting. I found it almost impossibile to recognise ships at night because I just couldn't see any thing.

Last night, my hydrophone picked up a cargo ship which was about 3 km away, I knew the bearing but I just couldn't spot it with my periscope because it was just simply too dark.

I was so frustrated not able to attack at night, so I increased the brightness of my screen and that enabled me to spot it and use the recognition manual. Was that kind of cheating? How difficult to see ships within 3 km at night under good weather in real world?

    Cheers,

    Wayne

Turning up your monitor brightness is not cheating as such.
Cheating is normaly when the games programing is altered in some way.

One thing about nighttime in any PC game is that if its dark then its dark. In real life our eyes or rather the iris in our eyes expands to let more light in so that we can see better.
So, turning the brightness up on your monitor could in effect simulate the iris

I guess alot of it depends on the lunar cycle. I live right on the North Atlantic coast and I can tell you that during a new Moon or if its waxing or waining it gets pretty dark out there. I doubt one could see a blacked out ship three kilometers away in the pitch black. So you had to crank up you brightness level? Just pretend you put on you glasses when you were looking through the scope-orUZO-. Could be you need to get closer when its darker out-I mean real close, like 1000m or under- but if its that dark I can't imagine the watch on a cargo ship would have any luck spotting your boat especialy if your submerged. Nah you weren't cheating just sliding the scale a little

With no lights on seeing in the middle of the night on the open ocean was very very difficult. So is it "cheating"? If you are trying to go as realistic as possible than I would say yes. Then again its just a game and however you want to play it is your call.

Well adjusting the monitor isint so bad... There are other things to consider, in a very bright room, the monitor contrast is somewhat diffused, then say in a darkened room.

If you come out of the game and the screen is too bright, I think you are pushing the envelope on the issue.

You should keep the settings around where you would normally have them set. If things look unusual in the sub, ala too bright, you have gone too far....

    In my opinion....

Nah, unless you turned it up to night vision type settings. Games always get darkness alittle wierd and its different for every monitor and enviroment the monitor is in. I come from a small country town and at night there without all the lights you can see to the horizon and be able to make out whats there on cloudless nights even with a new moon. Of course the years of living in a big city now have probably ruined that ability, since night is now a peach colored glow here

Also your monitor settings could have been dark to begin with and you just hadnt noticed it until playing this sort of game. When you are not sure where the ship is in total darkness, use the arrow keys and rotate your periscope and continually press the Lock (L) key repeatedly and when your scope hits the ship it will flash up with the arrow and youll know where its at. Keep it locked in this situation and adjust your sub for what ever attack run you plan on doing, until you get close enough to where you can actually see it without much difficulty, then you can do your manual aim and target your harpoons where you desire.

Absolutely not cheating. If the emulator is displaying a visible ship then the emulation is letting you see it. If it truly was too dark you would not see it even if you turned your brightness so black was turned to white.
I have a tft screen and found that it is better to play in a slightly darkened environment anyway. If you play in the daytime(real world) then close curtains, at night, used dimmed lighting. This also adds to the atmosphere of the game!!

Not cheating, in my opinion. And here is why I think so:

    1. Even the darkest night in the world is not completely pitch black. You can absolutely almost always see the horizon and shapes of objects backlit by the horizon. Unless there is a deep fog or a storm, you should be able to see a ship's shape as a blacker object against a slightly lighter sky. I've stood outside in remote areas on cloudy nights far from any lights, and I could still see the horizon and the trees against it.

    2. The game fails to model ocean phosperous, the tiny glowing sea creatures that often appear in the wake of passing ships. Hard to hide when you leave a green trail behind you.

Of course, if it's really THAT dark... then why bother to attack submerged, they won't see you coming anyways. *grin* But if your watch office says he can see a ship, then you should be able to as well. Hydrophone contacts are, of course, a different matter.
