Compatability mode isn't helping Exile in XP | Forums

I consider myself a Myst fan who fell off the wagon for a number of years. I'm only just now picking up where I left off at the end of Riven, having seen and bought a used copy of Exile.

But! While the game has no trouble whatsoever installing, when I try to run the installed game, the screen turns black for a few seconds (as though it were about to run) and then drops me back to the desktop without explanation, message, or ceremony.

I have changed the compatability mode to Win95 and 2000/ME and neither causes any change, let alone improvement.
I've also tried forcing the resolution down, through the compatability options, and I've tried lowering my colors settings to the settings detailed in Exile's sys-req.
When I run the program, the resolution does change, but then the same thing happens. Black screen, desktop. Though it has the courtesy of returning me to my regularly scheduled resolution.

I've tried it with the DirectX version in the box, and I've tried it with DirectX 9.

I've tried it with a normal install and I've tried it with a full install.

Every change I make, I get nothing. Same problem. Run the program, screen black, desktop.

I've got 512 MB of RAM, a 1.20 GHz AMD Athlon processor, and an nVidia GeForce 6600 with driver version 7.7.7.7
I'm running it all on Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 (Service Pack 2).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forums!

Sounds like you have a driver and/or hardware problem. If you'll post a DxDiag report in this topic, we'll take a look at your system and make recommendations.

To post a DxDiag report:
1. Click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the Open: box, then click OK.
3. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the main DxDiag window finish crawling and disappear.
4. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step! At least:
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
5. Click on the Save All Information button.
6. Close the DxDiag utility.
7. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you saved it. Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard:
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
8. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic:
-- a. Click on the yellow (furthest right) Quick Reply arrow in the bottom right corner of the page.
-- b. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: Compatability mode isn't helping Exile in XP box, type in any additional details of your problem.
-- c. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin of the box and one line down from your additional details, then right-click.
-- d. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
9. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard.

Also, tell us whether you're installing the original CD version or the new DVD version of Exile.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

"Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading any patches, drivers or DirectX.

1. Apply the Exile version 1.22 patch. This is myst3_patch_v1.22_us_pc.exe, available here. Download the patch to a folder on your hard drive, not to the Desktop. Note that the version 1.22 patch has been reported to cause problems with non-US (UK, European, or South American) releases of Exile. If you have a non-US release, download the version 1.2 patch, available here.

Apply the patch as follows:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Browse to myst3_patch_v1.22_us_pc.exe, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- e. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults.
-- f. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- g. Start Exile.

2. First, install NVIDIA's version 5.10 motherboard driver package for your nForce2 motherboard, available here. Reboot when installation is complete.

Then replace your very old ForceWare 77.77 video driver. Correctly install ForceWare 93.71, as detailed under Installing NVIDIA Drivers, "5. Here's the driver installation procedure." in Myst III: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. Be certain to include installing the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c as part of the driver installation procedure.

When these installations are complete, reboot and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Close all open applications and start Exile.

3. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be causing the black-screen problem with Exile. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
-- a. Close your Internet connection. DO NOT leave your Internet connection active while doing the following!
-- b. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager.
-- c. Click on the Applications tab.
-- d. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
-- e. Click on End Task.
-- f. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background applications are closed, including your anti-virus program and software firewall.
-- g. Click on the Processes tab.
-- h. Click on the desired process to highlight it.
-- i. Click on End Process.
-- j. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background processes are closed. If you aren't sure which processes can be safely closed, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.
-- k. WITHOUT rebooting, start Exile.

4. If you're overclocking, set everything back to OEM specs. Then log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and start Exile.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Well I got it working. I think it was the patch, because those drivers you sent me to actually messed things up for awhile. I think they're too new for my old card. Everything's fine since I reverted back to my 77.77 drivers though.
Now, to play Exile, all I have to do is manually set my display to 16-bit colors, and start'er up.

Because I've been going through and doing my best to reset everything to the way it was before I "upgraded" all these drivers, I think the only major difference between the way my system is now, and the way it was when Exile wasn't working, is the patch.

A very basic step, but I didn't think of it. It's embarassing, but oh well. Exile works now, so I'm happy. I just wish I knew how to fix the sound.
