Thread: hoping for thoughts on vanilla vs mods from you experten | Forums

  1. #1
    Hello all,

Just purchased SH3 (cringes - yes, I'm behind the times), and am *blown away* by the game. I immediately patched to 1.4b, which fixed a bunch of issues, but of course I'm still playing vanilla. I am in a campaign and still noticing some of the gamier aspects of vanilla. I am trying to research the various realism mods, and trying to decide on the best "big rework" package. I am sure this may have been discussed previously, but, am hoping for your current opinions/experiences/anecdotes with mods you're using, and what you like best, and maybe some links to concentrated info (if they exist).

As an example, from another genre, I purchased Rome Total War and didn't even finish a vanilla game before modding with the Rome Total Realism mod - I never looked back. Now, I'm hoping to do something like that with SH3.

From what I see so far, the "Not Your Mother's . . " mod may be the way to go for me - but am hoping some of you will chime in with info on what the current "big packages" are, opinions of overall effect - anything you can provide. I know different mods are the result of a lot of research and creative hard work, so i don't want to step on any toes by sounding like a popularity contest. Bottom line, just hoping for a "this is what I like most, and why" discussion. Any input will help - thanks in advance!

I second that, The Grey wolves Mod package is fantastic, and it has many of the smaller mods that you may eventually find on your own anyway.

I only run four Mods. TGW, A mod that skins my U-Boat to make it look like a real U-Boat and a mod that skins merchants in various ways so they do not all appear the same.

And SH3 Commander, this mod gives you more options, and make the realism factor even better, allowing you to changes some of the settings.

Plus it gives you the ability to modify the time compression and change the max to 2048 which is nice.

    Good Luck!

This one seems to be most popular, it's really adds to the immersion and fixes everything, the list of improvements and additions is literally in the hundreds.

This one is great because it adds in a lot of historical missions. It also upgrades all the graphics, screens, adds ships, like the other one.

Rub some diesel in your hair, take a shower and don't dry off, put on some old dirty clothes and try this one, for the full realism crowd:

Only run one of these at a time.

Thanks, guys, for the info so far! I should have mentioned, I'm more oriented on Campaign/career mode than single battles. Total immersion (no pun intended), and if I can't have both top graphics quality and realistic results, I'll go with the gameplay/results. I appreciate all the input, and am going to start d/ling a couple packages to try. I have room on my hard drive to do a copy of the game folder (leaving vanilla intact) and installing my mods into the copy. Cheers to all!!!

You might want to play vanilla until you just begin to get bored with it, then upgrade to Greywolves or whatever.
