This is a SecuROM annoying generic error.

The copy protection code checks for several things. Debuggers, emulation software, cd/dvd copy software,...

So, you may need to remove or deactivate that software.

Also, be sure that your user account directory is over a filesystem supported by SecuROM. For example Network filesystems don't work.

Creating a new user account may work, and if it don't works or you don't want to remove that software, you can install another copy of your OS on a separate partition without nothing, only to run copy protected games.

Well i removed all burning software of my computer and still no go and i dont feel like reinstalling my OS just to play Myst. I know that there trying to stop piracy but when you create a new copy protection that doesn't run on most systems then whats the point. I'm just going to wait for a cracked exe.

Also, that error comes up if it's unable to read certain parts of the registry. So you may have to be an admin user to run the game. (Which is stoopid.)

So what causes this error on a machine that has no burners, burning software, emulation software or 'virtual drives' installed?

There is a warning on the box about all rewriters, be they DVD RW or CD RW. You will be certainly able to play on a vanilla DVD / CD.

Someone's workaround was to put a DVD ROM into an external housing and connect to their PC by USB.

There is a warning about a possible conflict with SOME DVD-RW and virtual drives.
None of these exist on my machine.

Have you downloaded and installed the latest firmware version for your (apparently) DVD-ROM drive?

I am getting the same error.

I uninstalled my virtual drive software. I installed the latest firmware for my DVD-RW drive (Pioneer A07XLB). I followed the clean boot install directions to the letter. I am still getting the same error.

Whose bright idea was it to use this crappy copy protection?

What are my options at this point, really?
