There has been a few that I found cute, but for action stuff, I don't know, I'm a realistic action buff, and the stuff they have in anime is simply over the top weird. They have no limits because none of it's based off the rules in real life, so their imagination's the limit, I don't find that interesting, you can make anything happen, and it's possible because they say so. There have been a few that has tried to be realistic, some have been fairly interesting. I know you're probably saying, why bother with realism in an anime? Well, don't take me the wrong way, when I say "realistic" I don't mean the situations and whatever, it could be sci-fi, and can take place in some far away galaxy or whatever, but just without magic and fake physics and stuff like that. I just don't like it when a character can all of a sudden make clones of himself whenever it's convenient, and then magically teleport when it seems like he's in a tight situation. Stuff like that, keep the physics and stuff believable, but take advantage of the animation to have landscapes and stuff that you can't do in live video.

I think MDS_Geist's name comes from some anime, I seem to recall a thread about that at one point. I can't stand the stuff myself.

You're watching Evangelion and specifying no hentai? :P (kidding)

Escaflowne (two versions of this as a movie, both good, and then there's the series)

Safe for kids but(?) still excellent anime(imho):
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Castle in the Sky (Mark Hammill's voice sure gets around, even if his face is still Luke)

The technology group:
Akira (the one everyone raves about - works well for a while, don't expect to understand what you just watched by the time the credits roll)
Armitage
Ghost in the Shell (same guy as the one that made Akira, but MUCH easier to comprehend
Cowboy Bebop (the BEST series to come off of Toonami)
Outlaw Star (the second best series...
Spriggan
Sin (yes, as in the first person shooter from a few years ago)
Hellsing (guns. lots of guns. with vampires)
Blue Sub 6 (thin on plot, thick on visuals)

Serial Experiments Lain (out there. WAY out there - definitely not for everyone, especially those only seeking action)

Violence with big sharp objects:
Berserk (great series, be forewarned that it doesn't quite "end")
Vampire Hunter D
Ninja Scroll (part of a group of films with not so related names but the same characters)

That should keep you busy for a while.

Yah, Akira was pretty ******ed toward the end. You think the creators must have been smoking something good, or they skipped over a huge part that explained that somehow...

Anyway, for the technology part, you should include Wonderful Days.

Evangelion is pretty good, as long as you don't watch the last two episodes. THEY SUCK AND TOTALLY RUIN THE SERIES.

FLCL is really good. Off the wall, with great music and awesome artwork. From the people that brought you Gunbuster (old anime, great) and Evangelion (great as long as you don't watch the last two episodes or the movies)

Cowboy Bebop is good too (if you get a chance to watch the movie watch the Japanese one, not the US one. The US one is editted for terrorist actions. Pretty realistic in the physics side... mostly)

GoldenBoy (THE funniest anime I have ever seen. CAUTION: It does have perverted comedy though)

Noir (Great gun fights and such)

Ghost in the Shell (Better than Akira. Does just abruptly end though. The TV series is awesome. Watch for it when it finally comes out in the US.)

Macross ZERO (Prequel to the Robotech series. Actually the Macross series, but I won't get into the details)

Macross Plus (Great story with awesome dogfights)

Ninja Scroll (Gore galore!!!!)

Blood: The Last Vampire (Great visuals, lots of gore, VERY short)

Rurouni Kenshin OAV (GREAT STORY AND SWORD FIGHTS. The series in general (OAV and TV series) is based on a real time period. Some events and people in the series and OAV were actual people that lived in that time period. Watch the OAVs not the TV series. Actually the TV series isn't that bad, except it doesn't have gore and runs more on the comedy side. The TV series is called Samurai X... or is it the other way around?)

Want sappy romance? Watch Love Hina, Oh! My Goddess, or DNA^2

DON'T WATCH DRAGON BALL Z OR GUNDAM. I hate people that claim to be big anime fans and the only one's they've seen are Dragon Ball or Gundam. Plus I also hate Initial D, because its mostly all these wannabe racers who watch it. THAT'S JUST MY OPINION THOUGH

You should already have seen the classics too:
Robotech
Transformers
Mazinger (Tranzor Z)

I didn't realize there had been edits, so I looked it up. All in all, I don't think the edits really have that much impact on the film.

quote:
When Faye walks into the weather control center in the original Japanese version, the staff asks what she's doing there. She responds, "Can't you tell? I'm an average terrorist." The English dubbed version changes the line to, "Can't you tell? I'm just a gun-toting weather girl." to be more politically correct.

In the original Japanese version the message Vincent puts out to citizens is read by him. In the English dubbed version Jet reads it off the screen. In the English dubbed version when Spike comes back to the BEBOP with Electra's vaccine and Electra herself, Spike says to Jet, "Heard from Bob?" This line (absent from the Japanese release) makes it clearer as to how Jet knew the ISSP was at the water treatment plant.
