Hi all,

I am frustrated about the game crash when loading saved game. I have the Gold Edition (v1.5 with U-boat mission) and in US career model. When I restarted the computer and the game, I can always load the saved game for the early stage in a mission, I guess it is due to the small file size. However in the late stage in a mission, after I sunk more ships and completed a couple of objectives, I can always save and load the game as long as I don't Exit to Windows. If I exit to Windows and restart the game, I cannot load the last couple of saved games. It is very annoying. Please help.

Welcome to the SH4 Forum.

There is a problem with the game and saves but not sure if it applies to you. When you click on the SH4 icon and start the game it maybe trying to check the internet for updates before you start to play and this has caused some saved problems.
To check this go to the SH4 icon that starts the game, right click it and go to properties. Then check and see if the start up line says gu.exe or sh4.exe. If it says gu.exe check out this thread and read what it says to fix this.
Let us know what you find out and post back.

By reading the other posts on the forum, I have already made this change. Now I have found a dumb workaround and hope it can be always used going forward.
If I have altogether 20 saved games since the start of the mission, it will be a sure crash if I directly load the 20th (latest)save. However, if I load one by one starting from the 1st save, it works. Hope this can help the technical team to fix the bug.

ok, yes if I save with nobody around me no prob. But I have been badly damaged and on the sea bottom fixing my boat and needed to get to work so I saved and guess what! can't load. I have had my fill with this! WHEN will they fix the saved game problem. I should be able to save and load any time any where like I can in SH3. I will not restart a patrol or career again. moding and playing with the good looks of the game is bust if you cant load a saved game! PLS lets fix this!!!

Two things may cause your saved games not to work.
The first is to check and see if the game is starting using gu.exe or sh4.exe. To check this out go to the SH4 icon on your decktop, right click this and look to see what the exe file says.
More information about this is here.

If the above is not the cause of your saves not working then it has to do with your computer and not SH4. If it was a problem with SH4 all the people that play SH4 would have this problem. I can save anywhere, anytime and no problems. You may want to see what else is conflicting in your computer with SH4.

I already did the switch to sh4.exe rather than gu.exe As to the problem being my computer I do find that interesting. I see on alot of forums with people haveing major problems loading saved games unless they saved with no contacts around them. Other wise the game crashes when atempting to load. I will not dismiss my computer though. I'm running a XPS 720 running at 3.67GHz 4 GB duel Gforce 8800 gt
with vista. Would love to be able to load saved games at will. I always save on too files incase one goes bust but all do, again unless I'm alone when I save.

Rob what I would love to see someone try that has a save problem is to reformat their drive, re-install their operating system, then install Silent Hunter, patch it and try running it before installing any other programs and then see if they still have the save problems.

Do have any add on radio stations that have sceduled events? Does it give the "Sound Act" error when it crashs? This is a fix a ble issue if this is the case.

Hello, I found solution to my saved games problems (works for me 2/2 times).

I loaded game before I went to patrol,on which saved games crashed. Then,on the mission I saved game(let's name it "test")...,with no ships near by,TC x1, not submerged,speed 0 knots,on the open ocean. Then I quit the game,and started it from sh4.exe (like before).

Now I loaded "test". And when it's loaded I loaded my save,which crashed earlier. This save was in the middle of battle,with 12 other ships (large convoy or something). Its loaded well,all other ships were visible.

Now the best part. If I wanted to load again my orginal save with convowy,i had to quit to Windows,start sh4.exe once more,load "test" and then my orginal save.
So,loading crashed save works one time per running sh4.
