Thread: U-505 Exhibit to Re-open Spring 2005 in Chicago | Forums

If you get a chance to come to Chicago you must go see the new U-505 exhibit. It has been closed for a couple of years to refurbish and bring it indoors. I saw it 5 years ago and I know everyone in the forum would be thrilled to go aboard the only U boat captured by American forces. Its a great story and tribute to both sides, Axis and Allies. Check out the link below for photos and history of this famous boat.

The thing that I cant get over is how small this sub seems to me (in person on the boat) and its a type IX-C !! Almost 3X the size of type II. I cant imagine how life must have been like on a IX let alone the tin-can that was the Type II. A very awe inspiring ehxhibit to say the least.

I was there 2 yrs ago with my wife on a business trip and I went on it twice.I have been on US Fleet boats and than go onto a U-Boat and see the difference.I am reading the 2 new books on the U-505 and the museum has a new book coming out in May 200+ pages on the new U-505 exhibit.

Yes...And the museum is just a few hundred meters from my doorstep. Shame that I haven't been there before.

Yeah. . I live near Chicago so I am lucky. Seeing the exhibit as a kid was what got me interested in both learning German, was eventually and exchange student there, and in learning about submarines. I am hoping that this new exhibit really does help preserve the boat and that they opened / restored a few other sections like the conning tower. It is pretty small in person . . does make me think about the Type II that I am playing right now.
