    Anyone know what causes certain visual effects of the game like explosions, clouds and vapor streams to become black rectangular patches? I have a Radeon X1900XTX using latest ATI drivers with Tray Tools. WinXP Pro SP2. TIA

    Ok, I feel weird answering my own question, but the fix may help others. If you use ATI tray tools, you must create the game profile based on the actual executable and not a launcher app, which is exactly what the DX9_GU.exe file is. Therefore, I was bypassing this file when I linked the profile to the HAWX.exe file in the game folder. Bottom line, don't do this. Textures are normal now and game seems MUCH more stable.
