Thread: Hosting with a Router | Forums

    ~S~ All,

I am unsure if this is possible or not, but can a person host games via IP if they are behind a router?

I believe that my router is a D-Link unit and one computer is directly plugged to the cable modem and the router, while the other is remote wired access via a network jack in the wall.

The one I need to be able to host is the remote unit.

Thank you for any assistance you might be able to offer.

If I understand the question, you are running both computers through the router. If that is the case you need to forward port 21000 to the LAN IP address of the remote computer. A router acts as a filter that blocks outside attempts to communicate (through ports) to your computer. When you forward a port you are telling the router that it is ok to send the packets for that port to that particular LAN IP address. So the packets that would, for instance, take over your operating system and reformat your hard drive are still blocked.

It's not complicated; it just has to be right.
