Hi, I'm trying to re-install Myst V: End of Ages, but get a message saying there's already a version of MV:EOA on the computer and to uninstall it first. I've searched every nook and cranny of my computer and can't find another version of it. It won't install until i uninstall the other (nonexistant) MV:EOA!! Can anyone help? Cheers, Laney

If you can find a file on your hard disk called 'vpd.properties', trash it and try the installation again. It might work.

That's a good suggestion and should solve the problem.

A word of caution, however.

Programs other than EoA may also use vpd.properties. Trash this file *only* if you're certain it's NOT also used by other programs. If other programs do use vpd.properties, deleting it will probably result in those other programs not running.

If you aren't certain whether vpd.properties is used by programs other than EoA:
-- a. Use Windows Explorer to locate vpd.properties.
-- b. Rename the file to vpd.txt, and close Windows Explorer.
----- 1. Right-click on the filename.
----- 2. Click on Rename in the resulting drop-down menu.
----- 3. Type in vpd.txt.
----- 4. Press Enter to close the rename box.
-- c. Use Notepad or another text editor to open vpd.txt. You'll see lines like:

----- 1. Delete each of the sections with a Myst V reference.
----- 2. Be careful NOT to delete sections or parts of sections related to other programs.
----- 3. Be careful NOT to delete the spaces between sections.
----- 4. Save your changes as plain text in vpd.txt, and close the text editor.
----- 5. Use Windows Explorer to re-rename vpd.txt to vpd.properties.
----- 6. Re-install EoA.

This file was placed on my computer when installing Myst IV. Here's what my file looks like, and it did prevent installing Myst V on my PowerMac when present outside of the Myst IV application folder. From reading through the mess below, it appears to reference both Myst IV and Myst V.

Hello. thanks for that. I found the file vpd.properties and with my heart in my mouth, I deleted each line that didnt mention Myst V End of Ages (ie all the singular Myst referenced lines). There were lots but i took the chance. Good advice you gave me because it worked! My game loaded without a hitch and plays beautifully (so far so good anyway). Thank you very much. Much appreciated. I haven't a clue about computers so trusted you completely!! xxxx

To clarify for the benefit of others having the same problem, since you successfully re-installed EoA, your "didnt" must have been a typo, and you actually deleted lines that DID mention EoA.

I think she meant what she wrote. Reason being that it might have been the Myst IV stuff in that file that was causing the problem with Myst V.

Unless ElayneG is running an Apple OS, vpd.properties does *NOT* contain any references to Myst IV. At least that's been the case with the many Windows folks who've had problems with re-installing EoA.

And in fact that's been my own experience with many, many installs of EoA, both on my personal Windows PC's and on those of folks for whom I consult. Even as we speak, I've got both EoA and Myst IV: Revelation installed under various versions of Windows (as do my consultees), and vpd.properties does *NOT* in any instance contain any references whatsoever to Revelation.

However, anything is possible.

I'd really like to see comments from both Windows and Apple OS users - especially from ElayneG as to which OS she's running and what she actually did!

Maybe there's an unrecognized mousetrap out there just waiting to bite us Windows users....

No. I deleted each line that DIDN'T mention EOA (ie I deleted each line that mentioned anything else and kept the line/s that mentioned EOA) Sorry, if I didn't make that clear. Actually, out of dozens of lines I ended up with only one that mentioned EOA, so in effect all the other lines I deleted. It was pure luck that it worked as I really didn't know what I was doing. thanks again for your response and support. xx Laney
