Thread: Companies’ not hosting their own game patches! | Forums

  1. #1
The discussion subject says it all; need I say more. I’m just sick of it, sick of it, I say! I shouldn’t have to use Boomtown or Fileplanet, both of which require me to open an online account (free or otherwise) with them, just to get a patch that the developer/publisher of a game should host themselves. Heroes of Might and Magic V and UBISOFT aren’t the only games/publishers that do this either it seems like more and more companies are taking this same approach. It may save them money, but come on it can’t save them that much money. I just want game developers/publishers to host their own patches, nothing more. I’m not attacking UBISOFT or Nival here, nor am I attacking Heroes of Might and Magic V; I’m just pointing out a pattern I’m beginning to see that (in my opinion) is an unwanted/unneeded frustration for gamers (at least for this gamer). I personally think Nival/UBISOFT did a good thing for the Might and Magic Franchise. They did after all revive a dying franchise, and hopefully they will continue to do so by MAKING ANOTHER MIGHT AND MAGIC RPG.

don't forget they are making dmomm (Dark Messiah of Might and Magic)
But yeah totally agree on the patch host thing, although I suppose it is a free patch an is cheap to let other companies host it.

I mean Ubisoft would prolly pay thousands to host it properly themselves, and it is a free patch.

    Anarchy is the only way..

It's surely not enough to say that it's a 'free' patch.
    - If it added extra content to the game and nothing else this would be a fair argument
    - If, as is the case, it fixes a huge number of bugs in the original, then it's being supplied to sort out a product to the state it should have been in when released. OK so we all know that companies use patches as a coverall so they can release software and still fix probs later - but that would seem to leave them more of an obligation to host the patch.

It isn't a 'free' patch, it's part of what we paid for when we bought the game.
